Boo, is a little ruby boy found stray in very poor shape. His microchip led us to his owner who decided to release him into our care. We were able to obtain his birthdate from his microchip. We were also able to track down vet records. He was last vetted a year ago and weighed 17 pounds at that time With no history of weight loss or digestive issues. Now, he is just an 8 pound bag of bones 💔
While we initially suspected that parasites, worms, and/or an absorption issue was likely in play, labwork has been fairly unremarkable and indicative of malnutrition. Although we haven’t yet ruled out EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency), he is eating well and his stools are very normal. As long as that continues and we see weight gain, we feel confident chalking this up to neglect. We have started him on high quality groceries and a good multivitamin and we hope to see improvement both in his bloodwork and on the scale soon! Of course if we don’t, we will delve into further diagnostics.
Boo will make his way to his foster home in Dallas, Texas over the weekend and will be rechecked next week. Thanks to ATX Animal Clinic for seeing our sweet Boo 👻 on an emergency basis and helping to lighten up the mood ✌🏻💜
UPDATE October 2nd: Happy 5th Birthday Boo 🎉 Today he had a weight recheck and we are thrilled that he has gained a pound over the last week, now weighing 9 pounds 🙌🏻
His urinalysis did show evidence of bacteria so we have started him on antibiotics. He is enjoying good groceries and vitamins and we will recheck all his labwork in 2 weeks to ensure all his wonky bloodwork values due to malnutrition have improved, and that his urinary tract infection has cleared. We also hope to see double digits on the scale then too 🤞🏻
Boo is such a sweet, happy boy who loooooves to snuggle 💕 It’s heartbreaking to think what could have happened to him if our paths didn’t cross. You will never be hungry for another meal again, Boo, we promise you 💜
