Birmingham, Alabama

Last weekend we made a game time decision to try to rescue #328 off the auction block and out of the puppy mill industry. And it’s a good thing we did because today at her intake vetting we found out that sadly, she has heartworms. Had we not won her bid at auction, she would have been bought by a puppy miller where she would have never been tested, never given the opportunity to receive treatment, and would have continued to undergo reproductive abuse while these worms wreaked havoc on her heart and lungs eventually killing her. It’s incredibly difficult to think about how real and how close this scenario was for her... just one bid away from such a horrific fate. Thankfully though, there were people who before ever seeing her face, knowing anything about, or knowing she has heartworms said “#328’s life is important and she deserved to be rescued and get a second chance at life.” We want to thank our donors and of course our team for making her rescue possible. We have started her on 30 days of doxycycline leading up to her first heartworm treatment injection. Treatment takes about 3 months and can be very hard on them. We’re going to do everything we can to get her through this as smoothly and easily as possible. We’ve sent off all her labwork today and pending that coming back normal, she will undergo her spay and dental Tuesday. We’ve also started her on treatment for ear infections and giardia. Julia will remain here in Birmingham, Alabama for her foster care and treatment. Julia is a very lucky little girl and life is about to get a whole lot better 💜
