MEET MONROE & BENNETT 🐶🐶 Monroe & Bennett, now 13 weeks old, were born on the same day (8/26/2021) but are not from the same litter. They came to us as breeder releases when they 'failed' their puppy wellness checks prior to being sold. They have been fully evaluated and treated by our vets and are now medically cleared and ready for adoption! MEDICAL 🩺 Monroe is a darling boy weighing just over 7 pounds. He was reported to have a "knee issues", but when we had him medically evaluated, all we found was just mildly loose knees that are typical for growing, developing pups. His knees have already tightened up some since he arrived and will continue to do so. He is a healthy puppy with a clear heart, eyes, and hips. He tested positive for giardia, a parasite, when he arrived but has since received treatment and just received a negative test. Monroe is now up to date on all his puppy vaccinations, is microchipped, and has started monthly preventatives. He will be due for his rabies vaccine at 6 months of age (end of February), and he will be need to be neutered when age appropriate. Bennett is a tiny fellow weighing just over 4 pounds. He was reported to have a "jaw issue", but when we had him medically evaluated, all we found was an overbite. He is a healthy puppy and congenitally sound at this time with a clear heart, eyes, knees, and hips. He tested positive for giardia, a parasite, when he arrived but has since received treatment and just received a negative test. Bennett is now up to date on all his puppy vaccinations, is microchipped, and has started monthly preventatives. He will be due for his rabies vaccine at 6 months of age (end of February), and he will be need to be neutered when age appropriate. FOOD AND POTTY HABITS 🥘 Bennett is not very food motivated and prefers meals to be offered by hand while in his foster mom's lap. In time he will learn to eat on his own, but for now we are making sure this tiny fellow gets enough food each day. On the other hand, Monroe loves meal time and will gobble his bowl right up. They are both eating Fromm Heartland Gold puppy kibble three times a day and enjoy Fromm treats as well. As baby puppies, potty training is just beginning. The boys are using a washable piddle pad in their “pen” inside the home, and are learning to “go potty” outside in a confined and safe area in their yard. Their new family will need to continue to work on teaching them to potty outside. Puppies have very tiny bladders and need to be taken out very frequently - first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every hour or so throughout the day including right after meals and immediately after waking up from naps, to ensure potty training success. Please know that there will be accidents and that continued potty training, for many many months, will be needed. PERSONALITY 💜 Monroe has the bigger personality and is a typical playful pup! He is fairly independent and is able to entertain himself with whatever is available to him. He loves playing with toys and will engage anyone near him to participate in his antics with him. It is very important that he always has safe and appropriate toys within reach. He is a smart pup so his family needs to stay one step ahead of him and utilize plenty of positive reinforcement training to keep him on the right path. He also loves a high speed chase and will run and run until he crashes and recharges for round 2! After meals, this sweet and silly boys loves belly rubs! Bennett is more tenderhearted of the two and is a sweet, loving little guy who loves to play but equally loves to snuggle. He likes to be wrapped up tightly feeling safe and secure while he snoozes. But when his battery is fully charged, don’t let his size fool you - his little legs have no problem keeping up with Monroe! Everything is brand new to Bennett and he is taking lots of opportunities to explore, especially with his mouth. It is very important that the home is safe and puppy proofed and that Bennett is always closely supervised. ROUTINE ⏰ The growing boys eats three times a day and like all baby puppies, their day consists of going pottying (often), eating, playing together and napping together... then repeat, repeat, repeat. Puppies need a lot of stimulation, attention, supervision, engagement, and activity, so we are looking for a family with an adult who can be home most of the day to allow for plenty of opportunity for activity, socialization, and for potty training purposes as well. SOCIALIZATION 💕 The boys get along very well and love having each other for companionship and for play. If placed separately, we will be seeking a home where there is another young, active, playful Cavalier or other dog of similar size and temperament who will be welcoming and tolerant of puppy antics. Having a playmate will keep them engaged and busy which means less time for trouble! They are little puppies so supervision is needed to ensure playtime is not too rough. We also feel they would do well in a home with children old enough to know how to handle and engage with them appropriately and gently, as well as understand the importance of keeping their belongings 'put up' and out of puppy reach. Monroe & Bennett would do well in an active family, who have plenty of energy and enthusiasm, but not a busy family who would lack the time to devote to them and to raising a puppy. IDEAL FAMILY AND HOME 🏡 The boys are not yet leash trained and so a contained area (like an x-pen) in a well maintained yard is needed for their safety until they are leash trained and can be safely exposed to more and more outdoor space and freedom. In addition to an appropriate and safe outdoor area for pottying and play, we will also be looking for a very "puppy proofed" home as puppies will be puppies and will get into everything they can. Anything within reach of the pup is up for grabs. Ensuring the yard and inside of the home can and will be well maintained for their safety is imperative. Please know that supplies like x-pens and baby gates will be needed and required for the pups' safety and protection. Because they are baby puppies, they can easily fit through gaps, holes, or under and between things that could be dangerous, so careful supervision and extra diligence is needed to make sure they are safe at all times. HOW TO APPLY 💻 Monroe & Bennett will bring so much love, life, and laughter to a family that will embrace all they have to offer. If you meet their requirements, are ready for all the joys and challenges of puppyhood, and have the patience, endless love, and guidance they need to thrive, please complete an adoption application found on our website, and then email us at CavalierRescueAL@gmail.com to express your interest. Cavalier Rescue of Alabama dba The Cavalier Rescue rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Our dogs come in by breeder surrenders, owner surrenders, puppy mill dispersal auctions, shelter transfers, and strays. We work with shelters in many areas including Humane Society Partnerships in Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville, Anniston, Oxford, Lineville, Pell City, Tuscaloosa Montgomery, Dothan as well as several in Dallas and North Texas. We have active teams in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Texas. We partner with other rescues for the greatest impact possible.
We also focus on prevention which includes education. We support the Alabama Puppy Mill Project. Our founders helped rescue the dogs of Rock Cliff Farms in November of 2014. We advise people to be wary of breeders/puppy mills that use terms to market their dogs such as: Mini or miniature Cavalier, health guarantee, try to avoid answering questions, or won’t allow potential buyers to meet the parents and see where they live. Never buy a puppy from a pet store. Pet store puppies are puppy mill puppies.
We take care to give the dogs in our program everything they need to thrive with complete health evaluations and treatment, including eye specialists, cardiac specialists and orthopedic specialists. We treat luxating patellas, hip dysplasia, cardiac murmurs/insufficiencies, cancer, obesity, eye issues, and whatever else a dog may need to obtain best state of health.
