Precious Pumpkin is 1 of 5 Cavaliers in our Hospice Program. She arrived into our care from a puppy mill struggling to breathe. An emergency trip to our cardiologist revealed that she was in heart failure, full of fluid, and had a very grim prognosis 💔. Would you believe it if I told you that was 3.5 years ago?! That’s right, Pumpkin has been kicking mitral valve disease and congestive heart failure’s butt 💪🏼
Pumpkin was not able to undergo her spay surgery when she arrived into our care due to her heart status and of course at the time we sadly didn’t think she would be with us for long. Last weekend Pumpkin began to show signs of pyometra (infection of the uterus) which is a very serious and life threatening condition that all intact female dogs are at risk of developing. We immediately started her on antibiotics, got labwork ran off, and she made a trip to our cardiologist for a scan and to determine is surgery would even be a possibility.
We made the difficult but necessary decision to indeed move forward with the spay surgery which Pumpkin underwent last Friday. Although it was quite risky, thanks to an amazing medical team Pumpkin pulled through 🙏🏻. There is much relief knowing that this was curative to the deadly infection and that she is no longer at risk.
She is recovering well in her furever home and continues to impress us with her strength and resiliency 💕 She may look sweet but she is also tough as nails! These puppy mill survivors have such a will to live this good life that they now have 💜 It looks like Pumpkin has more of these happy days ahead 🙌🏻
