Welcomed in 5 year old Swayze (DOB 11/24/2014). He is a recently retired breeding dog who was sold / rehomed over the summer to a family who was not a match for him and his needs. They made the difficult decision to entrust us with his care and perfect placement.
He arrived into the family’s care with many medical issues that they have already addressed (worms, ear infections, severe dental disease, etc.) however, our intake vetting exposed some more. Swayze has some “hot spots” on his skin which we did cytology of and found he has a secondary bacterial skin infection likely from allergies. We gave him a cytopoint injection to help reduce the itch and allow for healing while we treat him with antibiotics. His urinalysis also revealed a urinary tract infection which he is now being treated for while the rest of his labwork including his heartworm test, tick borne illness test, fecal test, and bloodwork was all negative and normal. His tear test was slightly low (10, when normal is 14) and this drop in tear production could also be a result of inflammation / allergies that we see present with his skin. He have started him on a tear stimulant to help boost his production and feel that with that and getting his allergy response under control that this will improve. Lastly, while his knees and hips are congenitally sound and clear, a mild audible heart murmur was detected. This is very common in adult Cavaliers and tends to emerge at Swayze’s age.
Swayze came to us already up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, neutered, and had a recent dental so he will not need to go under for any procedure. We will be rechecking his skin, tears, and urine in a few weeks though to be sure we have effectively treated these issues. Swayze is getting comfortable and settled in to his foster home in Marietta, Georgia 💜
