MEET AMY 🐶
Amy was rescued out of a bad breeding situation by another rescue organization. Her initial vetting revealed medical needs that they were unable to meet and contacted us to see if we could help her. 7 year old Amy was then transferred into our care and she made the trip to Alabama to be welcomed in. It has been our pleasure to provide care for her including restoring her eyesight which has in turn given her so much confidence. Amy has bloomed before our eyes and we know she will continue to thrive in her perfect match furever family.
MEDICAL 🩺
Amy arrived into our care blind with bilateral hypermature cataracts. Thankfully, a visit to our ophthalmologist revealed that she was an excellent candidate for cataract removal surgery and new lens implantation. She underwent successful surgery in October to restore her vision and has had an amazing outcome! She just had her final post operative recheck with her ophthalmologist where she remains on just 1 eye drop medication given every other day. This is an anti-inflammatory eye drop to ensure any inflammation stays well managed. Moving forward, it is very important that Amy remains under the care of an ophthalmologist for routine monitoring to ensure her eyes and newly restored vision stay healthy. This surgery gave her such an incredible gift, and these important check ups help protect that gift. She will be due for her next recheck in September and likely every 6 months from there. Therefore, we are seeking a family who lives within reasonable driving distance to a veterinary ophthalmologist.
Amy is a healthy 7 year old girl! Her knees, hips, and heart are still clear and congenitally sound. And all of her labwork including her fecal test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, urinalysis, and bloodwork are all normal and negative. We treated her for ear infections and she also underwent her spay surgery and a dental in our care. She is up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, on monthly preventatives, and is not on any medication except for the anti-inflammatory eye drops.
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘
Adorable Amy is a cute blenheim girl who is typical in size and at her ideal weight of 15 pounds. Like most Cavaliers, she is a little foodie and is very enthusiastic for her twice a day meals and always licks the bowl clean! She eats alongside her Cavalier foster siblings with no issue, but supervision at mealtime is needed to ensure everyone stays in their own lane. She also gets healthy treats throughout the day for being the excellent girl that she is. Her adopting family should remain committed to her portioned meals, healthy treats, and daily activity to ensure she remains at her ideal weight, best health, and best self.
Amy is doing great with her potty training as long as she is provided frequent opportunities outside to be successful. She is taken out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every 2-3 hours in between including immediately after meals. She does not 'signal' or alert that she needs to go out to potty and so it is up to her people to take the initiative to take her out regularly and frequently. She is let out into the safe and secured fenced yard for pottying and is happy to go out as she loves being outside. Being food motivated, a special treat immediately following good potty behavior will be excellent reward and reinforcement for her. Please understand that while Amy is now reliable in her foster home, accidents are always to be expected, especially initially while she transitions to another environment and routine.
PERSONALITY 💕
As Amy has grown in confidence, we have watched her cute little personality bloom more and more. Having vision has opened up a whole new world for her! She loves being outside in the fenced yard where she will run laps, explore every inch of space, and has a ball watching and chasing anything that flies - birds, bees, and butterflies! Her foster mom says, "she is so funny - she will see a bird fly over and run after it... then look around wondering where it disappeared to!" Watching her chase after butterflies is the cutest thing in the world! She is also the sweetest snuggle bug who loves cuddling up close with you and needs someone who welcomes her closeness and snuggles. Her favorite position is being belly up which just begs for belly rubs! But even though she loves exploring outside, snugglings inside, and belly rubs, her favorite thing is food! Sweet little Amy has no problem pushing her way to the very front or stepping over any dog or obstacle if she thinks food is involved. Overall, Amy is a quintessential darling Cavalier who just enjoys the simple things in life - good food, sweet snuggles, and butterflies 🦋
ROUTINE ⏰
Amy starts her day going out in the yard to potty and then back in for breakfast and more outside time for pottying and play. On days where her foster family is working from home, she makes herself comfortable in the home office on a comfy dog bed and is the perfect coworker as she snoozes while they work. Every few hours, she is let out into the yard for pottying and fresh air and is great about following her spaniel foster siblings outside and taking care of potty business. During short periods of time when there are no humans at home, Amy and her furry foster siblings stay together in a gated off puppy proofed area of the home where she has plenty of space, comforts, and companionship. She has not been crated or otherwise strictly confined in our care as she does not need to be and we don't recommend that she is after a lifetime of confinement. She does well left for short periods of time but is of course happiest being with her people and so we are seeking a family where someone is able to be with her much of the day and where she will have low alone time.
After dinner, Amy hangs out with her foster family on the sofa where she enjoys quality cuddle and TV time until it's time for last potty outside before bed. Amy is invited up into the big bed and uses pet steps to safely get on and off the bed which should be available to her in her furever home. She loves snuggling up with you and sleeps peacefully throughout the night knowing she is safe and sound close to you. She would not do well being asked to sleep apart from her people and so we are seeking a family who will continue to welcome her into the big bed with them and embrace her sweet cuddles.
SOCIALIZATION 💜
Amy has come a long way in her socialization and overall confidence - certainly, being able to see and know what to expect helps a lot! She may initially bark when someone new enters the home, but she warms up quite quickly and will be on her back requesting belly rubs in practically no time! Otherwise, she does well meeting people when out and about and is happy to receive gentle attention and affection from those willing to give it to her. And if you offer her a treat, you're her fast friend! We feel she would be happy and do well in an adult only home or a home with older, gentle children who have dog experience and know how to interact with her gently and respect her space and boundaries. She would be overwhelmed in a busy, loud home and family with too much activity or people and enjoys a more leisurely, quiet, peaceful lifestyle.
Amy shares her foster home with other Cavaliers and quickly became part of the pack. In fact, she has gotten along beautifully with every Cavalier she has encountered while in rescue and has just a lovely temperament that is well received. She is used to having and enjoys canine companionship and can often be found sharing a comfy dog bed with a foster sibling, especially if a human lap is unavailable. We know she would be happy and do great with other mild mannered adult Cavaliers, or other dogs of similar size and temperament in the home. Her foster siblings are older and do not engage in play, but we've seen glimpses of playfulness in Amy and believe a playful friend may bring this out in her. After her vision was restored, she became interested in toys and will grab for one every now and then. She will also chase after a ball but hasn't quite figured out bringing it back. She has not been exposed to any cats while in our care and so we are unsure how she would do sharing a home with a feline friend, but believe she may want to chase.
Amy is a wonderful traveler and rides safely and comfortably in her boosted car seat where she enjoys looking out the window now that there is so much for her to see and take in! We will ask that her adopting family provide her with a boosted car seat so she can continue to do so. She loves to be able to tag along and accompany you as much as possible, and so we are seeking a family who will include her in their daily activities. She has also learned to become more comfortable on a leash and is enjoying leisurely strolls throughout the neighborhood.
IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡
Most importantly, Amy needs a loving, committed family who has the time and ability to shower her with so much love and attention and make her an included and important member of the family. Therefore, we are seeking a family where someone will be with her much of the day and provide for her plenty of opportunities for quality time with her people. She would also be happiest having plenty of opportunities to spend outside where she can run, explore, and chase and needs a safe and secured fenced yard in her furever home so she can continue to enjoy her outdoor freedom in. She does need to be supervised when outside as she is interested in plants and any dangerous/toxic plants need to have a protective boundary to prevent her access. House plants also need to be kept at a higher level, safely out of her range. Lastly, continued lifetime monitoring of eyes and vision by a veterinary ophthalmologist is so very important. Her family should live within reasonable driving distance to an ophthalmologist and be financially able to meet her eye care needs.
