MEET BOGEY 🐶
Precious Bogey needed us in 2015 when he found himself dumped in an Alabama shelter, homeless and with heartworms. We got him out, healthy, and adopted where he has been enjoying life with his family for the past 9 years. Sadly, his owner is suffering with advanced Alzheimer's disease and was no longer able to take care of him. Now at the age of 11, sweet Bogey needed us again and we welcomed him back in with open arms and paws. We have enjoyed our time with Bogey, getting to know him so that we can make another perfect match for him.
MEDICAL 🩺
Bogey is a healthy, active, spry 11 year old boy (DOB 5/2/2013). He is up to date on vaccinations, neutered, microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. His heartworm and tick borne illness test was negative, fecal test was negative, and bloodwork was normal. His urinalysis did reveal a urinary tract infection which has been effectively treated and cleared. Other than just some normal aging changes, Bogey's eyes, knees, and hips are clear and congenitally sound. He is on a daily joint supplement chew to help support his joint health as he ages, otherwise he is not on any medications. He was itchy when he arrived and has been enjoying medicated baths to help relieve this and has improved - we will provide his shampoo to his family. Like many senior Cavaliers, Bogey is hard of hearing but is doing well with visual cues and hand signals. He can hear loud sounds like clapping your hands, or an alarm, etc.
An audible heart murmur was detected and so Bogey underwent a cardiac evaluation and echocardiogram. Like many adult Cavaliers, Bogey has mitral valve disease (MVD) due to an insufficient mitral valve, but good news - his cardiac structure is still within normal limits and he was placed in stage B1 with just mild mitral valve disease at this time, and not requiring any heart medications. He will need recheck echocardiograms to compare to his baseline so that any progression of his MVD can be detected and best monitored and managed. His next echo is due July 2025. Therefore, his family should be within reasonable driving distance to a veterinary cardiologist and be financially prepared to meet his heart health needs.
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘
Bogey is a handsome boy with a unique black and white coat. He is 'mismarked' in that he is missing the typical tricolor brown accents. His fur was cut prior to coming into our care but is growing back out beautifully with excellent care. Bogey arrived into our care quite overweight but has already lost a few pounds in our care. He is down to 27 pounds but still needs to lose about 6 more pounds to reach his healthy and ideal weight. Like most Cavaliers, he is very food motivated and devours his twice a day meals and small healthy treats of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the day. He is eating a 'weight management' recipe and should remain on this until he reaches his ideal weight. His adopting family must remain committed to his strictly portioned meals, limited healthy treats, and daily activity to ensure he reaches his ideal weight, best health, and best self!
Bogey is perfectly housetrained and has not had a single accident while in his foster home! That said, he is not asked to "hold it" for long periods of time and is given plenty of opportunities outside to be successful - he is taken out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between throughout the day to ensure potty training success. He does not alert or 'signal' that he needs to potty and so it's important that his family take the initiative to take him out regularly and frequently. He will take care of his potty business let out into the safe and secured fenced yard or while walked on a leash. Although Bogey is reliable in his foster home, please know that accidents are to be expected initially while he transitions and learns a new environment and routine.
PERSONALITY 💜
Bogey's foster family describe him as a perfect gentleman! They say he is sweet, quiet, easy going, well behaved, and mild mannered. In fact, they have deemed him the most perfect foster they have ever had - and they have had a lot! Although he is a senior boy at age 11, he is still active, curious, and has a nice sense of adventure as he really enjoys exploring in the fenced yard and on his evening neighborhood leashed walks. He is also still enjoying toys in his senior years and it makes us smile when we see him go to the toy box to pick out a favorite toy! Of course, in true Cavalier fashion, he also loves to snooze and you can often find him in a comfy spot enjoying a little cav-nap! His foster mom describes him as the perfect little companion to enjoy life with.
ROUTINE ⏰
Bogey starts his day around 7am with a quick trip out in the yard for pottying and then back in for breakfast. He then finds a comfy spot in the home office along with his Cavalier foster siblings while his foster mom works from home. Every few hours, they are taken outside in the yard for pottying, exploring, sunshine, and fresh air. During the short periods of time when there are no humans at home, Bogey and his Cavalier foster siblings have free roam of the puppy-proofed house where he has plenty of space, comforts, and companionship. He does well left for short periods of time, but is certainly happiest being with his people and so we are seeking a family where someone is able to be with him much of the day and where he will have low alone time. He has not been crated or otherwise strictly confined while in our care - he doesn't need to be and don't recommend that he is.
In the evenings, Bogey enjoys his dinner and then spends time outdoors with his foster family around the pool or in the garden. When the temperature drops a bit, he goes for his daily evening leashed stroll through the neighborhood which he loves! He is a wonderful leash walker and enjoys getting out of the house exploring and socializing. After last potty of the night, Bogey will often take himself upstairs and put himself to bed! He sleeps in the big bed and sleeps peacefully through the night close to his person where he knows he is safe and sound. He uses pet steps to get safely on and off the bed and will ask that his family provide these for him and will continue to invite him to sleep in the big bed with them. He does snore some, but this will also improve with his continued weight loss.
SOCIALIZATION 💕
Bogey is your quintessential Cavalier who knows no stranger and greets everyone with a smile and wagging tail. He is a happy, friendly, social boy who will happily receive attention and affection from all willing to give it. We have not found him to be easily startled, scared, or fearful by anything and seems to be well socialized, adjusted, and accustomed to the world around him. We feel he would do well in an active adult only home or a home with older, well behaved, dog savvy children who know how to engage with a senior dog gently, appropriately, and respect his space and boundaries. Because he is a senior boy, he does appreciate a more quiet, peaceful, gentle home environment and lifestyle and would be overwhelmed in a loud, busy home with a lot of noise and activity.
Bogey shares his foster home with other Cavaliers whom he gets along with very well! Although he isn't playful with them, he seems to enjoy their companionship, and certainly follows their lead to learn the ropes and know what to do, especially since he is hard of hearing. We feel that Bogey could do well as the only dog in the home as long as he was able to be with his people most of the time and where he would have very low alone time. Otherwise, he would be happiest and do best with another mild mannered, adult Cavalier or other dog of similar size and mild, gentle temperament. Based on his 'enthusiasm' for the cat at the vet clinic, we would feel most comfortable placing him in a home without cats.
Bogey is a social boy who loves getting out and about and accompanying you on errands and little adventures. He is a perfect leash walker and excellent traveler, riding safely and comfortably in his Snoozer boosted car seat which we will ask that his family get for him. He is such a well behaved boy that we would do very well in public and social settings and would love to be able to visit places and be with you as much as he can, especially when the weather cools off. We are seeking a family who will commit to walking him daily which is not only great for his continued weight loss efforts, but is also his favorite activity to do together.
HIS IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡
Most importantly, Bogey needs a warm, loving, committed family who has the time to devote to him, who will shower him with so much love, and treat him as a treasured and beloved member of the family. We are seeking a family where someone is able to be with him much of the day so he will have low alone hours and lots of quality time with his people in his special senior years. Because he is leash trained, we are not requiring a safe and secured fenced yard in his home, but per our adoption agreement, if he is not within a safe and secured outdoor space, he must remain on a leash when outdoors at ALL times. This is especially important since he is hard of hearing. That said, he is certainly enjoying his outdoor freedom in the safe and secured fenced yard of his foster home, and so he would love it if his furever home was able to provide this for him. Bogey has no problem going up and down stairs in his foster home, but since he is older, we will ask that his family put carpet treads down on hardwood stairs, for his safety. He should also have access to pet steps to get safely on and off furniture. Lastly, his family should be committed to continuing his weight loss plan and be within reasonable driving distance to a veterinary cardiologist for monitoring and management of his mitral valve disease.
