MEET BREWER & RUTHIE πΆπΆ
Brewer (male) & Ruthie (female) are brother and sister littermates who are about to turn 6 months old (DOB 5/19/2025). They came to us last month after being rescued out of a bad breeding operation and now have the opportunity to live long, happy, healthy lives. They are available to be adopted together as a pair, or to be adopted separately to homes with another young, playful canine companion(s).
MEDICAL π©Ί
Brewer & Ruthie had their full intake vetting in our care and were found to have clear eyes, knees, hips, and hearts. They are up to date on their distemper/parvo vaccinations and received positive titer tests showing their immunity. Their fecal tests came back positive for giardia and hookworms which they underwent treatment for and are now clear of per their recent fecal rechecks on 11/6. They are now healthy pups with Ruthie weighing 9.4 pounds, and Brewer weighing 9.6 pounds. They will be due for their Rabies vaccine at 6 months of age, and will need to be spayed and neutered when age appropriate - between 6 and 12 months of age. They are microchipped and on monthly preventatives, and are now healthy pups!
FOOD & POTTY HABITS π₯
Now that they are free of parasites and off medications, they are good eaters, eating their Fromm puppy kibble meals twice a day with plenty of treats in between for positive reinforcement and as reward for being the exceptionally good puppies that they are! Breakfast is around 8am and dinner is around 5pm. Brewer doesn't like his feet sliding on slippery floors and prefers to eat on a rug, and also likes for you to accompany him when he is eating, else he will abandon his bowl to be with you. Ruthie is a slower eater and has been going into an open crate to eat so she can take her time without the other dogs encroaching. They should continue on their puppy food through 12 months of age and then can transition to an adult formula. They will go home with a bag of their puppy food and favorite treats.
Brewer & Ruthie have just started their potty training and are off to a great start! Puppies have tiny bladders and need to be taken out frequently to ensure continued potty training success - first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every hour or two throughout the day including right after meals and immediately after waking up from naps. They potty best being let out and supervised in the well maintained and safe and secured fenced yard and receiving immediate praise after good potty behavior. Upon being let back inside, Brewer will race over to where the treats are and await his reward - clever boy! In typical Cavalier fashion, Ruthie isn't a fan of going out in the rain. Please understand that while they are off to a great start with their potty training, there will be accidents and continued training will be needed and required for quite some time.
PERSONALITY π
Brewer's foster family describes him as a sweet, sensitive love bug who is happiest snuggling up with you. He is a clever boy, eager to learn and to please, catches onto things and routines quickly, and has been easy to train. Being a young pup, he has bursts of boundless energy, but is also a chill boy who is very content to just cuddle up with you especially once he has run out of steam. He loves his toys and since he is teething, he loves chewing on safe chew sticks. We see him really come to life and is most animated when he is outside in the yard zooming around, exploring, and chasing bugs and birds. When he's sleepy, he loves to curl up with you and give you sweet kisses. Overall, Brewer is a silly, sweet, playful pup with a typical wonderful Cavalier personality and temperament.
Ruthie's foster family describes her as spunky, cuddly, and smart! Like Brewer, she picks up on routines and things very quickly and has adjusted so well and quickly from puppy mill life to princess life! She loves to play and collect ALL the toys and romps and wrestles with all her Cavalier foster siblings. When it's time to recharge her battery, she loves to plop down right in the middle of the Cavalier cuddle puddle for a good nap. But when a human is available, she loves to cuddle up with you too and gives sweet puppy kisses! She is a cute, sweet, smart pup who loves her new life filled with toys, treats, friends, and love!
ROUTINE β°
Mornings start with being taken out to potty then back in for breakfast, back out to run around, play, and then time for a morning nap. They then spend much of their day with and apart of their foster family where they play and nap on repeat, and enjoy outdoor time in the yard, on a leashed walk, or stroller ride. Wherever you are, they are close by, following your every move and will quickly claim your lap if you go to sit down. Whenever they cannot be directly supervised or for short periods of time when no humans are home, they stay in a gated off puppy proofed area of the home where they have some space, comforts, and companionship. They settle down quickly and do well left for short periods of time, but of course are happiest being with their people and having lots of opportunity for activity, attention, and play, and so we are seeking families where someone is able to be with them much of the time and where they will have low alone time.
In the evenings after dinner and pottying, they like to wind down with couch time cuddles with their people. When it is time for bed, they are taken out for final pottying, get their bedtime treat, and then get in the big bed where they find their perfect spot cuddled up close to you. Brewer is also known to sometimes sleep under the covers, and Ruthie loves sleeping with her blankey. After a day full of activity and play, they sleep well throughout the night and feel safe and sound being right next to you. We are seeking a family who will continue to invite them into the big bed to sleep - where all little prince and princesses belong. Pet steps should be provided to them so they can safely get on and off the bed as they should not be jumping.
SOCIALIZATION π
Spending their first 5 months in a bad breeding operation, Brewer & Ruthie were behind on their socialization but have been getting good experiences in their foster home and have learned that humans can be safe and good. They are now friendly and excited to meet new people and wiggle their whole bodies in excitement. They will allow gentle petting and will even give away some kisses. A lot of sounds are brand new to them and they can be easily alerted to and startled by loud or new noises - the television, dishwasher, laundry machine, hairdryer, and vacuums are all things they have gotten used to in their foster home but will encounter new sounds in a new home. It is important to remember that everything is brand new to them and to go slowly with introductions and be intentional about making every exposure a positive interaction and association. We feel they would be happy and do well in an active adult only home or a home with older (age 8+), gentle, well behaved children with dog experience who know how to love and engage with the puppy appropriately and gently and know to keep their things out of puppy reach. Pups can also be 'mouthy' and their 'play biting' is normal puppy behavior. Children should be old enough to understand this and not confuse these behaviors with aggression. This play biting can be well managed by redirecting pup to an appropriate chew toy which should always be available to them to prevent them from chewing unwanted objects.
Because positive human interactions and experiences are crucial at this time for their socialization, the puppies should have plenty of opportunities to meet and interact with people. They have been introduced to a harness and leash and have practiced some leash walking so that they can start to get out and about and expand their little worlds. We would encourage their families to continue safe leash walking practice in quiet, low traffic areas. For longer outings and walks, they enjoy being pushed in the stroller. They also ride well in the car, safely and comfortably in their boosted car seat, and love being able to be with you and tag along whenever appropriate. We are seeking a family who will include them in their daily activities. We will ask that their family provide a car seat for them so they can continue to do so.
Brewer & Ruthie are used to having canine companionship and furry playmates. If placed together, they will be excellent playmates and companions for each other, otherwise, if placed separately, we are seeking homes that have another young, active, and playful Cavalier or other dog of similar size and temperament. Their ideal match would be a resident dog who is welcoming, tolerant of typical puppy antics, will share toys and belongings, engage in play and activity with them, and also welcome their sweet puppy snuggles. They have not been exposed to cats while in our care, but we feel they would likely do fine with a dog friendly cat in the home.
IDEAL HOME & FAMILY π‘
Most importantly, these sweetheart pups need a family who can shower them with love and attention and make them included and important
members of the family. They also need a loving and patient family as there will be accidents, chewing, and mishaps. They want nothing more than to be with you and because puppies need a lot of stimulation, attention, engagement, and activity, we are seeking a family where someone can be with them most of the day to allow for plenty of opportunity for activity, socialization, and successful potty training. We are also seeking a home with a safe and secured fenced yard so that they can continue to enjoy their outdoor freedom and for potty purposes as they are not yet consistent with pottying on a leash. They love being out in the yard where they can expend much of their puppy energy! They must be supervised outside at all times as puppies will be puppies and try to put everything in their mouths. Yards should be well maintained and puppy proofed and fences that are not 'privacy' may need to be reinforced due to their small size and being able to fit through narrow spaces.
In addition to a safe outdoor area for pottying and play, we will also be looking for a very 'puppy proofed' home. Anything within reach of the pups is up for grabs and so ensuring both the inside and outside of the home can and will be well maintained for their safety is imperative. Because they are tiny pups, they will need to be protected from stairs and any railings that they may be able to squeeze through. They are fearless and will not understand dangers, so their new family must be diligent to keep them safe and equipment like gates and xpens should be utilized to do so. Brewer is a fearless jumper and pet steps should be provided to them and encouraged to use to safely get on and off furniture.
