MEET BUFFET 🐶
A month ago, life completely changed for precious 6 year old Buffett (DOB 6/12/2018) after he was rescued out of an Alabama puppy mill. He has spent the past month in his foster home learning all about this new way of life that includes freedom, love, and family. But change, even when good, can be scary for a puppy mill dog who has only known life in confinement. We've already seen sweet Buffet start to bloom in such a short amount of time in rescue and know he will continue to in his perfect match furever home!
MEDICAL 🩺
Buffett is a healthy boy! He is now up to date on vaccinations, neutered, had a recent dental (with 1 extractions), is microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. All his labwork including his fecal test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, urinalysis, and bloodwork is normal and negative. Additionally, we found his eyes, knees, hips, and heart to be clear and congenitally sound at this time. Buffett is not on any medications and does not require any additional vetting outside of regular wellness checks at this time.
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘
Handsome Buffett is typical in size and at his ideal weight of 14.7 pounds. His blenheim coat and cute curly ears are starting to grow in nicely now that he is receiving good groceries and great care! He is eating and enjoying his twice a day Fromm kibble meals. He eats right alongside his Cavalier foster siblings with no issues and always licks his bowl clean. He is also enjoying healthy treats throughout the day for lots of positive reinforcement as he learns all about this new world around him. He has been trying lots of new foods that didn't exist in puppy mill life, and likes blueberries, green beans, cucumber, and watermelon! His adopting family must be committed to continuing his portioned meals, healthy treats, and daily activity/exercise to ensure he remains at his ideal weight, best health, and best self.
This is the first time Buffett has ever been in a home environment, and he is off to a great start with his potty training as long as he is given plenty of opportunities outside to be successful. He should be taken out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between including immediately after meals. He uses the safe and secured fenced yard in his foster home for pottying and is great about doing his business when let outside. A special high value treat immediately following good potty behavior will be excellent reward and reinforcement for this sweet boy who is learning all about these new expectations for him. Even though Buffett is off to a fantastic start with his potty training, please know that accidents and some initial marking are to be expected, especially initially while he transitions to another environment and routine.
PERSONALITY 💕
Buffett's foster mom describes him as sweet, loving, and playful, but also still quite timid, scared, and cautious, mostly when it comes to people and human interaction. Of course he never received any human love or attention in the puppy mill and so he is just beginning to learn how to interact with people and how to receive love. You can tell he very much wants your love and physical affection, but right now it's just a bit overwhelming and scary for him so it's best to just go slowly and gently and know that over time he will become more and more comfortable. As he gains more sense of security and confidence, more of his darling personality will come out, but he has already shown us his silly and playful side! Buffett has discovered toys in foster care and will empty all of the toy baskets! He loves toys and especially loves unloading the baskets and fully enjoying the whole loot! A full toy basket is a must in his furever home. He also loves being outside and exploring around the yard, chasing after the tennis ball with his Cavalier foster sister, stealing laundry out of the bin, has come to enjoy gentle soft petting, and napping on the couch and big bed.
ROUTINE ⏰
Buffett starts his day being let out in the yard for pottying, back in for breakfast, and then is ready for some play! On days where his foster mom goes to work, he is pottied before she leaves and then stays in a safe puppy proofed area of the home where he has his space, comfy bed, Jakey Blankey, water, and the companionship of his Cavalier foster siblings. Buffett does well left for a few hours at a time but of course he is happiest being with his people and having plenty of opportunity for activity and play, and so we are seeking a family where someone is able to be with him at least part of the day. Dinner is at 6pm and then it's time to empty the toy baskets and some then some couch TV time - he is fascinated by the television! After last potty outside, Buffett uses pet steps to safely get onto the big bed and claim his spot snuggled up with his foster mom and Cavalier foster siblings. We think this is his favorite part of the day and this closeness is excellent for bonding and so we are seeking a family who will continue to invite him up to sleep with them in the big bed. Pet steps should be provided up to the bed so he can safely get on and off.
SOCIALIZATION 💜
Buffett is very timid, cautious, and distrusting of people and startles and spooks when there is movement toward him or when reached for. Over the past month, he has reached a level of trust and comfort with his foster mom and has shown great progress. He is just starting to learn what it is like to have a bond and relationship with a person and we can see that he wants more! He responds best to a gentle, calm voice, and lots of patience and gentle encouragement. Because he is afraid of being reached for, it's best to encourage him to come to you and then give him ample time to check you out and warm up to you. He will need a patient family who will give him time and space to continue to bloom, and he will be happiest and thrive best in a more quiet, peaceful adult only home or a home with older, gentle children with dog experience who can understand his puppy mill past and respect his space and boundaries.
While he is timid and unsure of people due to his lack of experience, he has been very socialized with other dogs and is very happy and comfortable among his Cavalier foster siblings where he quickly became part of the 'pack!' They all get along great and he can often be found playing with his Cavalier foster sister who also enjoys toys and fetching balls with him. He would do best with another canine companion(s) in the home not just for play and companionship, but also for leadership. Buffett doesn't know how to be a dog and he is learning best by following and modeling after the other dogs in the home who can show him the ropes. When he sees them receiving and enjoying human affection and attention, then we see him wanting to experience that too. His ideal canine companion(s) would be one that will welcome him in with open paws and will engage in play with him like chasing balls, playing with toys, and romping and exploring through the yard, as well as allow him to cuddle up close to them. He would do very well in a multiple Cavalier home or with another dog(s) or similar size and gentle temperament. It is a a joy to see him completely comfortable and confident enjoying himself in play with his Cavalier furiends! He has not been around cats while in our care so we are unsure how he would do with a feline friend in the home.
IDEAL HOME & FAMILY 🏡
Most importantly, Buffett needs a loving, patient family who has the time and ability to shower him with gentle love and attention and make him an included and important member of their family. He would benefit from a family with experience working with undersocialized and timid dogs and who will give him the time and space to allow him to bloom on his own time. He would thrive best in a quiet, peaceful home which he can share and enjoy with another playful canine companion(s). Buffett needs a home with a safe and secured fenced yard for pottying purposes and so he can continue to enjoy his outdoor freedom - he loves to run, roam, and explore! Buffett has been introduced to a leash but is very nervous and uncomfortable with it at this time. Because he is still so easily startled and spooked by movements and noises, it is just not safe for him to be on a leash outside of a safe and secured area and we will encourage his family to continue positive practice with the leash inside of the fenced yard until he is more comfortable. He does ride well in the car in the safety and comfort of his boosted car seat and where he can safely see more of the world around him. He enjoys car rides and we will ask that his family get him a Snoozer car seat and continue to take him out for rides.
