MEET DARCY 🐶
Darcy is a precious little girl who just turned 7 years old on 2/21. She came into our care last month as an owner surrender after her former family experienced unexpected life changes making it difficult for them to continue her care. She has been a joy to have in our care but is now ready to find her perfect furever family!
Darling Darcy came into our care already spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations, but she underwent a thorough physical exam and full labwork in our care. We found her to be a very healthy girl! Her eyes, knees, hips, and heart are clear and congenitally sound at this time. Additionally, her fecal test, heartworm test, urinalysis, and bloodwork were all normal and negative. She did test positive for exposure of Ehrlichia, a tick borne illness, but further testing revealed that she does not have an active infection and that no treatment was needed. Her adopting family should understand that she will always test positive for this on the antigen test because of exposure. She was in need of a dental cleaning, which she underwent, and lost just 2 bad teeth. Darcy is not on any medications and does not require any additional vetting outside of regular wellness check at this time. She is a healthy 7 year old girl!
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘
Darcy is typical in size and at her ideal weight of 16 pounds. She was shaved prior to coming into our care but her lovely tri color coat is starting to grow back in beautifully. She eats her twice a day Fromm meals and small Fromm treats throughout the day. Unlike many Cavaliers, she isn't food crazy and prefers to take her time with her meals and will even back away from her bowl if the others try to swoop in and so supervision is needed at meal time to ensure she gets her fair share. Her adopting family should be committed to continuing her strictly portioned meals, limited healthy treats, and daily activity/exercise to ensure she remains at her ideal weight, best health, and best self!
Darcy has proven to be reliably potty trained, having had no accidents in her foster home. That said, she is never asked to 'hold it' for a long period of time and is provided frequent and regular trips outside to be successful. She is taken out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between including immediately after meals. She loves going outside and so she is happy and eager to go out and take care of her potty business. Even though Darcy has been reliable in her foster home, please know that accidents are always expected, especially initially while she transitions and learns a new environment and routine.
Darcy's foster family describe her as a 'velcro' dog. In true Cavalier fashion, she wants to be with you, and preferably on you, at all times. She is very quick to claim your lap if you take a seat, or will make herself comfortable on the back of the chair or couch right behind your head where she will wrap herself around your neck like a scarf! She has to be right in the middle of everything you are doing and is an excellent little sidekick and companion! She is super sweet and affectionate and is always ready to snuggle. She loves to show her affection for you by giving you kisses. She is a bit of an attention hog and likes to be 'front and center' so if there another dog in the home, s/he should be okay with her taking on this role.
Her foster family also describes her as being an active gal who likes to explore and be on the 'go'! She is very spunky and spry and acts much younger than her age. She is always up for an adventure with you and because she is an excellent car rider and excellent on a leash, it makes it super easy and enjoyable for you and her to go on special outings together. She loves being outside and enjoys the freedom she has in the safe and secured fenced yard where you can find her sniffing and exploring. She is always on patrol where she will alert (bark) for deliveries, neighbors, or any activity. If there is too much activity outside, she is asked to come in. Inside, she loves playing with her favorite squirrel toys which will definitely be going home with her. She is hilarious with these squirrels where she will toss them all around and 'kill' them. She likes it when you join in on the fun and tug on them.
Darcy starts her day getting up at about 6am and then out for pottying and in for breakfast. She then spends much of the day with her foster family being leisurely and enjoying both indoors and outdoors. On nice days, the patio door is left open where Darcy can go in and out as she pleases. When she isn't outside exploring and patrolling, she can be found snoozing on the sofa. During the short periods of time when no humans are home, Darcy, along with her furry foster siblings, has free roam of the puppy proofed home where she has plenty of space, comforts, and companionship. She does well left for short periods of time but she is of course happiest being with her people and so we are seeking a family where someone is able to be with her much of the day and where she will. have low alone hours. Darcy has not been crated or otherwise strictly confined while in our care and she does not need to be nor do we recommend that she is.
In the evenings, Darcy enjoys her dinner and then likes to hang out in the kitchen while her foster mom prepares family dinner. Like any good sous chef, she gets a little taste of veggies to ensure they are up to par! After last potty outside, Darcy gets into the big bed where she claims her spot snuggled up close to her foster mom. She sleeps peacefully through the night knowing she is safe and sound next to you. She would not do well being asked to sleep apart from you and so we are seeking a family who will continue to invite her into the big bed with them, where all princesses belong. There should be pet steps up to the bed so she can get on and off safely.
Darcy is trepidatious of strangers and has a tendency to bark at them and be standoffish until she gets to meet them. Once she has the opportunity to check them out, she settles down quickly and wants to become friends. Her adopting family should expect her to initially react to them in this way, and any new people that she meets. We feel she would do well in an active adult only home or a home with older, well behaved children with dog experience who know how to engage with her gently and respect her space and boundaries. Because she is leary of new people, she wouldn't do well in a home where there are a lot of people coming in and out as she prefers to keep her circle small.
Darcy shares her foster home with other dogs whom she cohabitates well with. That said, she hasn't really developed a relationship with the other dogs and is much more focused on her relationship with her people which is very important to her. She is an 'attention hog' and so the other dogs in the home could get a bit jealous of her and how she asserts herself to be front and center. We feel she would be happiest as an only dog in the home where she could get all the attention, or could do well with another easy going dog who will not compete with her. Because of her spaniel prey drive, we would not feel comfortable placing her in a home with cats.
HER IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡
Most importantly, Darcy needs a committed, loving family who has the time to devote to her and will shower her with so much love and attention. She wants to be the center of your world and has so much love to give back. Her ideal family would be one who is looking to spoil and pamper a little princess and wanting a sidekick companion to enjoy life with. Therefore, we are seeking a family where someone is able to be with her much of the day and where she will have low alone hours and lots of cuddle time. She loves her outdoor freedom and so a well maintained and safe and secured fenced yard is a must for her. She would love a family who also loves to spend time outdoors with her and take her on adventures. She enjoys car rides and is a perfect passenger - we will ask that her family get her a boosted car seat so she can continue to ride safely and comfortably.
