MEET JASPER 🐶
Last month, adorable 7 year old Jasper (DOB 11/15/2016) was rescued out of a puppy mill by another organization and then transferred into our care. He has adjusted so well to life outside of the mill, and now after 7 years of breeding, he is ready to find his perfect forever family to call his own and continue to enjoy life as a beloved pet and family member.
After effectively treating him for ear infections, we are very happy to report that Jasper is a healthy 7 year old boy! He is now up to date on vaccinations, was neutered in our care, had a recent dental (no extractions needed), is microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. He was found to be congenitally sound with clear eyes, knees, hips, and heart (no murmur detected!) Additionally, all of his labwork including his fecal test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, urinalysis, and bloodwork was normal and negative. He is not on any medications and does not require any additional vetting outside of regular wellness checks at this time. He is a healthy boy!
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘
Darling Jasper is smaller in size at his ideal weight of 14 pounds. His beautiful tricolor coat is growing in beautifully now that he is receiving excellent care and groceries. Like most Cavaliers, he is a foodie and is very excited for meal and treat time! He will even put on a leaping performance while waiting for his bowl to be put down! He is learning to 'sit' for treats but it can be hard for him to contain his enthusiasm. He eats his twice a day Fromm meals, is an excellent eater, and always licks his bowl clean. His adopting family must remain committed to continuing his strictly portioned meals, limited healthy treats, and daily activity/exercise to ensure he remains at his ideal weight, best health, and best self! A bag of his food and treats will be sent home with him.
Jasper has never been in a home environment before prior to rescue, but he is doing excellent with his potty training. His marking has diminished since his neuter surgery but he will be sent home in a belly band since it is to be expected that he may initially mark in a new space. He is now reliable in his foster home as long as he is given frequent opportunities outside to be successful. He does not alert or signal that he needs to potty and so it is important that his family take the initiative to take him out regularly and frequently - he is taken out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between including immediately after meals. Because he is food motivated, a special high value treat immediately following good potty behavior will be excellent reinforcement and reward for this sweet boy. Please know that potty training is ongoing and that accidents are always to be expected, especially initially while he transitions and learns a new environment and routine.
Jasper's foster family describe him as a dream dog and the perfect companion! He is a happy, loving little boy who has adjusted so well to his new way of life and is just thriving! This is evident in his precious little prance which has earned him the name Jaunty Jasper! He loves affection and TLC and will nudge your hand or brush up against your leg to get your attention and ask for pets please. He is a friendly, outgoing boy who is happy to receive attention and affection from all willing to give it! In true Cavalier fashion, he is always on your heels and wants to be wherever you are and doing whatever you are doing. As Jasper gets more and more comfortable, we continue to see more of his darling personality where a playful side is starting to emerge. He loves to play "hide and seek" under a blanket with his foster mom and is now getting interested in playing with toys!
Jasper enjoys sweet morning snuggles and cuddles in the big bed before getting up and starting his day. After a trip outside for pottying and stretching his legs, it's in for breakfast (and the preceding breakfast performance!) before spending the rest of the day on a leisurely schedule of snuggles, naps, and outdoor activity. He enjoys his outdoor freedom in the safe and secured fenced yard and leashed walks in the neighborhood or on the beach. He spends much of the day with his foster mom and his Cavalier foster siblings, but during the limited times when there are no humans home, he stays in a gated off puppy proofed area of the home with his foster siblings where he has plenty of space, comforts, and companionship. He has not been crated, or otherwise strictly confined, since being in our care and he does not need to be and don't recommend that he is after living a life of confinement. He does well left for short periods of time, and is very excited to see you when you come home, but he will be happiest and do best in a home where someone is able to be with him much of the time and where he will have low alone hours.
In the evening he enjoys dinner and then lots of snuggle time on the couch with his foster mom and siblings as everyone winds down for the night. After last potty outside, he uses pet steps to get into the big bed where he sleeps peacefully and soundly next to his foster mom. He would not do well being asked to sleep apart from you and so we are seeking a family who will continue to invite him into the big bed where every Cavalier belongs.
Jasper is a social butterfly and has so much love to share with others! He has never met a stranger and is loving, outgoing, and friendly with everyone he meets. He will be your instant best friend and crawl right into your lap like he's known you forever. He thrives off being with people and really needs opportunities to meet and be around people and socialize. One way he loves to do this is with daily walks through a public area, like on the beach, where he can stop, meet lots of people, and is encouraged to do so. For his happiness and wellbeing, we are looking for a family who will be committed to providing him with these 'outings' and social opportunities. Because he is an excellent car rider and excellent on a leash, it makes these outings easy and enjoyable for him and you! We will ask that his family get him a boosted car seat so he can continue to ride safely and comfortably.
We haven't found Jasper to be a timid or cautious dog in any way and he is not fearful of much, not even storms, and certainly not people despite his puppy mill past. We feel he would be happy and do well in an active, adult only home or a home with older, gentle, dog savvy children. Unfortunately we don't feel comfortable placing him in a home with younger children as he has shown us that he does not like his face being grabbed and held or you being too close in his face, like to kiss it. If this space boundary is pushed or violated, he will growl to let you know that he is uncomfortable and unhappy with this. This is not aggression, but communication, and it should be respected by all family members to ensure everyone's safety.
Jasper shares his home with other adult Cavaliers whom he gets along with very well and quickly became part of the pack. He very much enjoys their companionship and being able to follow the resident dogs has really helped with Jasper's transition into home life. He can often be found snuggling up close with them and is just now starting to explore toys and play! He will be happiest and best with another welcoming adult Cavalier(s), or other dog of similar size and mild temperament, and so that is what we are seeking for him in his furever home. He has not been around cats in our care but does not have a high prey drive and we feel he would likely do fine with a dog friendly feline in the home.
HIS IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡
Most importantly, Jasper needs a patient, loving family who has the time to devote to him, will make it a priority to include him, and treat him as a treasured and beloved member of the family. We are seeking a family where someone will be with him much of the day and where he will have low alone hours and plentiful snuggle time, as well as a resident furry furiend of similar size and temperament for companionship and leadership. For continued potty training purposes and because he is enjoying his outdoor freedom in the safe and secured fenced yard in his foster home, we are seeking the same in his furever home. He does not need a lot of outdoor space as he prefers to do his "exploring" and outdoor activity/exercise on leashed walks. There are no stairs in Jasper's foster home so if there are stairs in his new home, please know that he will likely need some help and practice before he masters them.
