MEET POPPY 🐶A month ago, precious 1 and a half year old Poppy (DOB 2/12/2023) was rescued out of a filthy, hot Alabama puppy mill. Rescue and freedom sure look good on this adorable girl- in just a short time she has already gone from puppy mill to princess! She is now healthy and ready to find her perfect match furever family who will continue to treat her like the precious princess that she is!MEDICAL 🩺Poppy is a healthy girl! She is now up to date on vaccinations, spayed, is microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. All of her labwork including her fecal test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, urinalysis, and bloodwork is normal and negative. Additionally, we found her eyes, hips, and heart to be clear and congenitally sound at this time. Her knees were mildly loose at intake, but may strengthen and stabilize now that she is no longer confined and has plenty of opportunity for activity and exercise. They do not bother or limit her, nor cause her any discomfort, and no intervention is needed. Poppy is not on any medications and does not require any additional vetting outside of regular wellness checks at this time. FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘Poppy is typical in size and at her ideal weight of 16.8 pounds. She is a beautiful ruby girl with a thick silky coat. Poppy is eating and enjoying her twice a day Fromm kibble meals and healthy treats throughout the day. Like most Cavaliers, she loves food and being food motivated makes training much easier - she has mastered the “sit” and is working on the “stay”. Her new family will need to make sure she gets her appropriately portioned meals, healthy treats, and daily safe activity to ensure she remains at her ideal weight, best health, and best self.Poppy has been doing wonderfully with her potty training and potties outside reliably, as long as she is given plenty of opportunities outside to be successful. She is taken out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every couple of hours in between including right after meals. Poppy is taken out into the safe and secure fenced yard in her foster home for pottying where she is great about taking care of her business. Because she is treat motivated, a yummy treat immediately following good potty behavior has been excellent reward and reinforcement for her. Even though Poppy is now reliable in her foster home, please know that accidents are always to be expected, especially initially while she is learning her new home environment and routine. PERSONALITY 💕Poppy's foster family describes her as a happy, friendly, spunky little girl who never meets a stranger. She loves everyone! She would love an active family and would enjoy youngsters and another playful canine companion to play with as she has endless energy. She is still very much a puppy with a spunky curiosity who loves exploring, investigating, and is always on the go. She also loves toys, zooming around the house and yard, fetching balls, and chasing and romping with her Cavalier foster sister. While she loves toys, like with most puppies, she should not be left unsupervised with them as she can destroy them - the tags should be cut off and a close eye should be kept on her. Poppy could play all day, so she needs to be provided with plenty of opportunities for activity, play, and to expend her energy. It will take a lot of attention and interaction to keep this busy girl entertained and out of trouble too. When she has run out of steam, she turns into a very cuddly girl who loves to snuggle up with her person. In true Cavalier fashion, she just can't get close enough and always has to be touching you, like velcro.ROUTINE ⏰Mornings start with a trip outside in the yard for pottying and then in for breakfast. She then spends much of the day with her foster family- being where they are and doing what they are doing. Her foster mom works from home where she is happy to play or nap nearby. She takes frequent trips out in the safe and secured fenced yard for pottying, play, sunshine, and fresh air. Afternoon playtime includes yard time, and iFetch 'ball in the hall', then dinner and a movie to end the day. Once she settles down in the evenings she is very cuddly and loves to snuggle. After last potty outside, she uses the pet steps to get onto the big bed and claim her spot ON her foster mom as she just can't snuggle close enough. We are seeking a family who will continue to invite her into the big bed with them and who will welcome her close cuddles. While Poppy spends much of the day with her foster family, during short periods of time when no humans are home, Poppy and her Cavalier foster sisters stay in a safe and puppy proofed area of the home where she has plenty of space, comforts, and companionship. Like most Cavaliers, she doesn't like to be left without her people and has demonstrated some separation anxiety when left. While she enjoys the company of her Cavalier foster sisters, she still wants her people nearby. She has never had a person before and so this will just take some time and effort to help her understand that they will return home to her every time. It is important to us that we find her a family where someone can be with her most of the day and where she will have low alone time. Crating or strict confinement will only exacerbate the anxiety and so we are seeking a family who will not crate her, but rather make use of baby gates or similar barriers when necessary to keep her safe and out of any trouble or dangers that puppies can get into. SOCIALIZATION 💜Poppy is “Miss Congeniality” - she has never met a stranger and loves everyone! She will greet them with a wagging tail, smile, and will happily accept attention and affection from all willing to give it to her! She would be happiest and do best with an active family who will provide her with lots of interaction and attention and will take her out for fun activities and adventures. She would do well in an active adult only home or a home with gentle kiddos with dog experience who know how to engage with her gently, appropriately and know to keep their things out of puppy reach. She has taken very well to a leash and is enjoying her daily leashed walks as they provide for her wonderful opportunity to explore new places, meet new people, and burn some 'puppy energy'. She also does great riding safely and comfortably in her boosted car seat, making her the perfect traveler. We will ask that her family provide one for her as well.Poppy gets along very well with all her Cavalier foster siblings. She and her younger foster sister play hard and have a big time together. Poppy needs this kind of canine companion in her forever home, and so she will require a young playful pup of comparable size and energy level and who will engage in play with her and be welcoming of her puppy antics. She will not be placed in a home with only a senior dog as this would not be good for anyone. Poppy has not been exposed to cats in our care so we are unsure how she would do with a feline furiend in the home. IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡 Most importantly, Poppy needs a family who has the time and ability to shower her with so much love and attention and make her an included and important member of their family. We are seeking an active family where someone can be with her much of the day where she will have low alone time and will be included in their daily activities. She would love to be part of an adventurous family, with another active playful pup, who will take her along with them for all the fun! She would not do well in a busy family who would lack the time she needs for activity, attention, and interaction. Because she is a young pup, she can easily get into trouble and needs to be closely supervised to ensure she is safe. Poppy is comfortable being on a leash so a fenced yard is not required, but is preferred as she loves her outdoor freedom and exploring.
