Welcome in, Rosalie! 💕
Sweet 5 year old Rosalie was recently rescued out of a bad breeding operation by another rescue who then transferred her into our care. She has since undergone her full intake vetting where she received a thorough physical exam and full labwork.
14 pound Rosalie tested negative for heartworm and tick borne illnesses but her fecal was positive for hookworms which she is currently being treated for. Her bloodwork and urinalysis was normal. We were not provided with vaccination records, so we opted to run distemper and parvo titer tests to check her protection/immunity. They came back confirming she was protected and so no vaccination needed.
Ear cytology revealed both bacteria and yeast and so we are treating her ear infections. While her knees and hips are clear, a heart arrhythmia was detected and because she needs to undergo spay surgery, she’s going to visit a cardiologist first for a work up to learn more and ensure she’s safe for surgery. She will be undergoing her cardiac evaluation tomorrow.
Lastly, Rosalie arrived into our care with very dry, painful eyes with secondary infection, inflammation, and a corneal ulceration. Indeed, her tear test was 0 meaning that she is not currently producing any tears. We have started her on a regimen of several eye drop medications to treat the ulceration, infection, inflammation, and help to stimulate her tear gland to start to hopefully produce some tears. We will give her a few weeks on this regimen and see if we can’t get something going. If not, she’ll make a visit to an ophthalmologist so we can pursue some more aggressive options.
Rosalie enjoyed a much deserved pup cup after her vetting and is settling into her foster home in Birmigham, Alabama. We will be sure to post an update after her cardiac appointment 💜
UPDATE NOVEMBER 28, 2023: Sweet 5 year old Rosalie was rescued out of a bad breeding operation by another rescue who then transferred her into our care. She underwent her intake vetting in St. Simons Island, Georgia where an abnormal heart rhythm was detected. This led to an echocardiogram where it was determined that she has an Atrioventricular (AV) Block and needs to see a cardiologist for further assessment and to determine the severity. Some AV blocks require no treatment at all and just monitoring, while others may require medication or even surgical insertion of an artificial pacemaker 🩺 With our cardiologist in Birmingham, Alabama, and cardiac surgeons in Auburn, Alabama, we decided it was best to move her across the state line to best address her medical needs. Yesterday she made the trip 🚘 and is now settling into her new foster home in Birmingham, Alabama 🏡 We are also treating Rosalie for hookworms, ear infections, and dry eye which seems to be responding well to her eye medications as we can already visibly see much improvement. We are waiting to hear from our cardiologist about when Rosalie can be seen and further evaluated and we will be sure to keep you posted 💜
