Tilly

Birmingham, Alabama
Female Age: 2 (DOB 8/4/2022 ) #15.8 Healthy! Adoption Donation: $600
AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION ⏰ Low alone time/someone with her much of day 🌱 Safe & secure fenced yard preferred 🐶 Playful, confident resident dog 💜 Older, well-behaved kids okay 🛑 If you do not meet ALL the above requirements, your application will not pass the screening process for consideration. We do not compromise on these requirements as we feel they are essential to a successful adoption with Tilly. MEET TILLY 🐶 Precious 2 year old Tilly (DOB 8/4/2022) came into rescue as an owner surrender when her family felt they could no longer meet her needs. She has been a joy to have in rescue but it's now time for this sweet girl to find her perfect match furever family who will continue to shower her with endless love and attention. MEDICAL 🩺 Tilly arrived anxious over her big life changes, but was clearly well cared for. She came to us already up to date on vaccinations, spayed, and microchipped, and received a thorough physical exam and full labwork at her intake vetting visit where she received an excellent report! All of her labwork including her fecal test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, bloodwork, and urinalysis was normal and negative, and her eyes, hips, knees, and heart were found to be clear and congenitally sound at this time. She had a mild ear infection where we treated her for and showed signs of having a food allergy which has been addressed and alleviated through a food change. Tilly is a healthy 2 year old girl who is up to date on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. She is not on any medication and does not require any additional vetting outside of regular wellness checks at this time. FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘 Tilly is a beautiful tricolor girl with a soft, silky coat. She arrived slightly overweight which we have been working on in foster care. Her current weight is 15.8 pounds and we believe her ideal weight is about 14 pounds. Her meals are measured and supplemented with frozen green beans, which she loves! Tilly is eating and enjoying her twice a day Fromm kibble meals and pieces of treats throughout the day. Like most Cavaliers, she loves food and savors her meals from her special plate. She is not one to drink much water as she has a bit of an aversion to bowls, so her foster family helps hold the “scary” bowl at times to encourage her to drink. She does enjoy crushed ice and spins in circles in excitement when she get it. She looooves treats which she expects to receive after going outside to potty. Her new family should be committed to continuing her portioned meals, healthy treats, and daily exercise and activity to ensure she reaches her ideal weight, best health, and best self. Tilly has proven to be reliably potty trained, having no accidents in her foster home. That said, she is provided plenty of opportunities outside to be successful, being taken outside first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between including shortly after meals. Once she became familiar with her new environment, she also 'signals' that she needs to go out by going and standing by the door, waiting to be noticed. Tilly is asked if she needs to “go potty” which is followed by a trip outside. Tilly uses the safe and secure fenced yard in her foster home for going potty where she is great about taking care of her business. Because she is treat motivated, a yummy treat immediately following good potty behavior has been excellent reinforcement for her. Even though Tilly has been 100% reliable in her foster home, please know that accidents are always to be expected especially initially while she transitions to another environment and routine. PERSONALITY 💕 Tilly's foster family describes her as sweet and curious, but she is also a bit timid at first when meeting new people. She really loves attention and affection, so once she warms up to you she’s ALL in for love and cuddles - she loves belly rubs and he will happily roll over if you offer them! She is also an active girl and fetch is her favorite game - she will bring her toys back to you over and over again! She loves toys and will dig in the toy box and spread them all over the place, bouncing from one toy to another in hopes of getting attention and interaction with her people and foster pups. She really loves interacting with her humans, and while her Cavalier foster siblings are not very playful, we can see she is eager to engage and interact with them. She loves running behind her foster siblings in the yard but otherwise is not explorative outside on her own. We believe a suitable canine playmate in the home is necessary for this active, playful girl! Tilly was very vocal when she first arrived. This was loud and seemingly uncontrollable. However, once we became certain there was no physical pain or reason for this, we addressed this behavior with positive training. She is remarkably better and understands that howling and barking do not bring rewards. She is an incredibly smart girl and quickly understood the verbal correction of “no m’aam”, which brought an immediate reward. This reward is usually a toss of a toy, hands-on affection, and plenty of verbal affirmations. She loves hearing she is a “good girl” as she finds joy in pleasing her people. When she is bored, afraid, or overly excited, she will still howl at times but quickly quiets down when she now realizes it is not productive. ROUTINE ⏰ Tilly wakes up around 7am and takes a trip outside in the yard for pottying before coming in to enjoy her breakfast. She then spends much of the day with her foster family- being where they are and doing what they are doing. While Tilly does not like to be alone, like most Cavaliers, she is not a velcro pup and is content to just be in the same room with people or furry friends. When her foster mom works from home, she is happy to nap nearby, with her pile of toys. She takes frequent trips out in the safe and secured fenced yard for pottying, sunshine, and fresh air. She loves lounging on the patio when it’s comfortable outside, but when it heats up, she prefers the cool house. When it’s time to make dinner, she eats her green beans first then digs into her kibble. The rest of the night is spent playing, relaxing, and cuddling with her foster family. She is good about using pet steps to get on and off the couch and we will ask that her family provide steps for her as well. After the last trip outside for pottying, Tilly sleeps on the big bed with her Jakey Blankey. She prefers the foot of the bed where she sleeps soundly all night long. As rare as it is, she is not a snorer! We are seeking a family who will continue to invite her into the big bed with them where all little princesses belong. Tilly spends much of the day with her foster family, but during short periods of time when no humans are home, Tilly and her Cavalier foster siblings have free roam of the safe and puppy proofed master suite where she has plenty of space, comfort, and companionship. She may howl for a few seconds but settles down quickly and does well when left for short periods of time with the company of her foster sisters. However, she is certainly happiest being with her people and so we are seeking a family where someone is able to be with her much of the day and where she will have low alone time and plenty of opportunities for attention, activity, and play! SOCIALIZATION 💜 Tilly is a little cautious when meeting new people but quickly warms up once she is offered gentle affection. Her new family will need to understand how to continue managing her much improved, vocal behavior with plenty of positive reinforcement and be able to offer her plenty of opportunities for activity, play, interaction, and engagement to keep her busy, happy, and eventually a 'tired Tilly'! We feel she would do well in an active adult only home or a home with older, gentle, well behaved children who have dog experience. Tilly gets along very well with all her Cavalier siblings and has looked to them to know what to do, where to go, and how to behave. She is a playful girl who would love a playful pup to interact with and really needs one to help her stay active, happy, and prevent boredom. She is also wonderful on a leash and would enjoy daily walks with her family. She travels very well in the car, riding safely and comfortably in her boosted car seat, which we will ask that her family get for her. She loves being with you and included and would love to accompany you on errands, outings, and adventures whenever appropriate. IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡 Most importantly, Tilly needs a family who has experience with positive reinforcement training, has the time and ability to shower her with gentle love and attention, and make her an included and important member of their family. Therefore, we are seeking a family where someone can be with her much of the day and where she will have low alone time. She also needs a full toy basket and a playful canine companion who will interact with her. and engage in play and activity. She would pair best with another young, active Cavalier or other dog of similar size and gentle temperament. Because she is comfortable on leash, we are not requiring a safe and secure fenced yard in her forever home, but do prefer it. She has no problem with stairs and is capable and comfortable using the significant deck steps to get into the yard.
