Welcome in, Arya! 2 year old Arya (DOB 6/8/2022) comes to us as an owner surrender with a serious heart condition. Unfortunately it has not been properly evaluated and diagnosed and so we are unsure exactly what she is facing but believe it may be a PDA (patent ductus arteriosis), a birth defect, based on how it sounds π©Ί Today she is with our cardiologist for a full cardiac evaluation and echocardiogram so that we can learn more and she can finally get the medical intervention that she needs and deserves β€οΈ Arya is being fostered in Atlanta, Georgia π‘ and we will share a medical update soon!
UPDATE NOVEMBER 16, 2024: Yesterday we introduced you to 2 year old Arya (DOB 6/8/2022) in Atlanta, Georgia who came to us as an owner surrender with a significant heart issue that has gone undiagnosed and without proper assessment. So yesterday she visited with our cardiologist where she underwent a full cardiac evaluation and echocardiogram and was diagnosed with PDA (patent ductus arteriosis). PDA is a congenital heart defect that is due to the failure of the ductus ateriosis (a large blood vessel) to close after birth, leaving a passageway for blood flow and resulting in eventual left sided heart disease and heart failure. This condition, left untreated, will result in death for most dogs within the first 1-2 years of their life. While Arya is not yet in heart failure, thankfully, her echocardiogram revealed that she has changes to her heart and that she needs life saving surgery to repair her PDA as soon as possible. We have done many successful PDA surgeries with the amazing cardiology team at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama in the past (most recently baby Barkley in April) and they are able to get precious Arya in on December 17th. If successful, this surgery is curative and Arya will go on to live a full, healthy life ππ» While we sure wish she could have found her way to us sooner, we are thankful she is still stable and now has the opportunity she deserves to repair her broken heart π
UPDATE DECEMBER 17, 2024: Today, precious 2 year old Arya (DOB 6/8/2022) made the trip over from her foster home in Atlanta, Georgia to Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama to fix her broken little heart β€οΈβπ©Ή
Her assessment today confirmed her diagnosis of PDA (patent ductus arteriosis). While Arya is not yet in heart failure thankfully, her echocardiogram did reveal that she has changes to her heart and that she needs life saving surgery to repair her PDA.
Arya will undergo this surgery tomorrow and if successful, the surgery is curative and Arya will go on to live a full, healthy life ππ» Send pawsitive thoughts πΎ her way and we will be sure to keep you posted tomorrow as we get in pupdates from her amazing cardiology team π©Ί
UPDATE DECEMBER 18, 2024: Arya was able to be discharged from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine today after undergoing her lifesaving heart surgery yesterday to repair her PDA β€οΈβπ©Ή She is doing very well and is now back in her foster home in Atlanta, Georgia resting and recovery π
From her report: βThe morning after her procedure (today), Chest x-rays were performed to document the placement of her ACDO device, which was confirmed to remain in appropriate position. An echocardiogram was then performed to further assess her response to the procedure. We are very happy to report that Arya's PDA is completely occluded by the ACDO, meaning that she has no blood flow across it detected on echocardiogram. Additionally, her left heart is no longer enlarged. Both her left heart chambers have shrunk and are actually small in size today. Based on Arya's echocardiogram, we are hopeful that as long as she has a smooth recovery withoutcomplications, she should be "cured" because of her surgery and go on to live a normal life.β ππΌ
She may have been at Auburn to have her heart fixed, but she sure stole a lot of hearts while she was there π We donβt think her paws ever touched the ground πΎ A HUGE thank you to the fantastic team at Auburn for always taking exceptional care of our babies π
