MEET DIESEL 🐶
Handsome 8 year old Diesel (DOB 8/12/2016) came into our care after a good samaritan rescued him out of a bad situation where he was being neglected and abused. She got him back on the right paw and then entrusted us to continue his care and placement. Diesel has thrived in his foster home in New Orleans, Louisiana and has been a joy to have in our care, but he is now ready to find his furever family who will continue to show him the good life and shower him with so much love.
MEDICAL 🩺
Diesel is a healthy boy who is now up to date on vaccinations, neutered, had a recent dental (9 extractions), is microchipped, on monthly preventatives, and not on any oral medications. All of his labwork including his fecal test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, urinalysis, and bloodwork is normal and negative. He has clear knees, hips, and heart (no audible murmur) at this time. He has an occasional cough which is not heart related and may be due to past respiratory infections, poor former living conditions, or even something like allergies- no intervention is needed. He arrived into our care blind with hypermature cataracts in both eyes. While his left eye was found to not be a surgical candidate, his right eye was and he underwent cataract removal surgery in February where he received a brand new lens and the gift of vision! He now has good vision from his right eye and also some vision in his left eye due to the cataract reabsorbing.
Diesel has fully recovered from cataract surgery but will need to remain on some eye drops for life, and will also need to remain under the care of a veterinary ophthalmologist. He is on 3 eye drop medications that he receives twice a day (AM & PM) - Ketorolac for managing inflammation; Tacrolimus for maintaining adequate tear production; and Dorzolamide Timolol for controlling intraocular pressure. It is very important that his furever family remain committed to his eye drop routine to ensure his eyes stay healthy, visual, and comfortable. He is due to see an ophthalmologist every 6 months so his furever family should be within reasonable driving distance to a veterinary ophthalmologist. His next recheck is due in September.
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘
Diesel is typical in size and at his ideal weight of 17 pounds. He is a handsome tricolor boy whose coat is continuing to grow in beautifully with excellent care and groceries. Like most Cavaliers, Diesel is a foodie and gets super excited about his twice a day meals, twirling and dancing while you prepare them. He eats quickly and so supervision at mealtime is needed to ensure he doesn't visit the other dogs' bowls after he races to finish his. He knows the word 'treat' and will 'sit' like a good boy when asked to get a Fromm Crunchy-O, Charlie Bear, or sweet potato treat. Diesel's adopting family must remain committed to continuing his strictly portioned meals, healthy treats, and daily activity to ensure he remains at this ideal weight, best health, and best self.
Diesel has been impressive with his potty training as he is now reliable in his foster home. That said, he is given plenty of opportunities outside for pottying and is taken out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between including right after meals to ensure continued success. A special treat immediately after pottying will be excellent reinforcement and reward for this food. motivated boy. While Diesel is reliable in his foster home, please know that accidents are always to be expected, especially initially while he transitions to another environment and routine.
PERSONALITY 💕
Diesel's foster family describes him as a happy, friendly, easygoing boy! They say, "he loves everyone, goes with the flow, and always has a wagging tail!" While he is a friendly boy who loves everyone, he has a favorite person - his foster mom who he likes to stick close to in truer Cavalier fashion. He is always up for getting out and about and loves his leashed walks and car rides. He lets you know by dancing and singing by the door! He would be happiest in a family who will include him when appropriate in their outings, errands, and adventures. Since he is such a well behaved, well mannered, and well socialized boy, he does great out of the house and in public. He just loves being with you and spending quality time together whether it's being lazy and cuddly on the couch, going for a leashed walk, or accompanying you as your passenger, he's up for anything and happy to go with the flow!
ROUTINE
Diesel is up around 7am, goes outside in the safe and secured fenced yard for pottying, and then back in for breakfast and eye drops. He then enjoys a rather leisurely day with his foster family following his foster mom around or relaxing with his furry foster siblings. He is let out into the fenced yard every few hours for potty, exploring, sunshine, and fresh air. In the afternoon, he enjoys a leashed walk around the neighborhood and then dinner (followed by eyedrops) is around 6pm. While he spends most of the day with his foster family, during short periods of time when there are no humans at home, he and his furry foster siblings stay in a gated off puppy proofed area of the home where he has plenty of space, comforts, and companionship. He does not like to be behind a closed door (will scratch at it), and he would not do well in strict confinement, like a crate - he does not need to be crated or otherwise strictly confined and we don't recommend that he is. Diesel does well left for short periods of time but is of course happiest being with his people and so we are seeking a family where someone will be with him most of the day and where he will have low alone time.
After last potty outside around 10pm, Diesel is invited up into the big bed and uses pet steps to safely get on and off the bed which should also be available to him in his furever home. He sleeps peacefully throughout the night knowing he is safe and sound snuggled up to you. We are seeking a family who will continue to invite him into the big bed for snuggles and sleep. Who wouldn't want to cuddle up with this cutie?!
SOCIALIZATION 💜
Diesel is a well socialized boy who does very well meeting new people - he greets everyone with friendly curiosity, a wagging tail, and a smile. He has been appropriate and done well interacting with people of all ages and sizes and we feel he would do well in an adult only home or a home with gentle, well behaved children with dog experience who know how to engage with him gently and will respect his space and boundaries. He is not a fearful dog and we haven't found him to be scared or startled by much of anything, but we have seen him be overwhelmed and anxious being around overly active, playful, and barky dogs. At age 8, we feel he will be happiest and do best in a more quiet, peaceful home without too much activity and noise.
Diesel shares his foster home with other dogs - an older adult lab and two senior Cavaliers. He gets along with them very well and quickly made himself at home and a part of the pack. Although he doesn't engage them in play, it's obvious that he very much enjoys their companionship and can often be found sharing a dog bed with them or running alongside them in the yard. If he had younger foster siblings, we may see a more playful side come out. We feel he would be happiest and do best with another dog(s) in his furever home and are seeking a home with a resident canine companion who will welcome him in with open paws. His ideal match would be another mild mannered adult Cavalier(s) or other dog of similar gentle temperament. As mentioned earlier, he would not do well with a hyper, active, or loud/barky sibling as this makes him anxious. He has been exposed to a cat in his foster home and is the perfect gentleman around her, so he would likely do fine with another dog friendly feline in his furever home.
Diesel is comfortable being on leash and enjoys walks and getting out and about. He is also a great traveler riding safely and comfortably in his boosted car seat which we will ask that his family get for him so he can tag along with you as much as possible. He is so relaxed in the car that he falls asleep almost immediately. He is always ready to go and is just happy to be able to be with you, enjoying an activity and adventure together.
IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡
Most importantly, Diesel needs a loving, committed family who has the time and ability to shower him with so much love and attention and make him an included and important member of the family, especially after enduring such a rough past. Therefore, we are seeking a family where someone will be with him much of the day and provide for him plenty of opportunities for activities, fun, cuddles, and quality time with his people. We also feel he would be happiest continuing to share his home and life with a furry furiend for companionship. Because Diesel is comfortable being on a leash, we are not requiring a safe and secured fenced yard in his furever home, but we do prefer it as we can see that he is enjoying his outdoor freedom and space in his foster home. If you do not have a fenced yard, please know that per our agreement, we do not allow our dogs to be off leash outside of a physically secured area and so he must always be taken out on a leash, for his safety. Lastly, his family should be committed to maintaining his daily eyedrop regimen, be within reasonable driving distance to a veterinary ophthalmologist, and be able to financially meet his eyecare needs.
