🛑 If you do not check ALL of the above requirements, your application will not pass the screening process for consideration. We do not compromise on these requirements as we feel they are essential to a successful adoption with Elle.
MEET ELLE 🐶Elle came into our care back in March heavily pregnant, giving birth to her puppies just 3 days later. She was an absolutely wonderful, loving, devoted, and attentive mother who poured herself into caring for her babies until they were ready to find their furever home. Once her puppies were adopted, Elle was finally able to recover from the demands of motherhood and we could turn our attention to tending to her needs. Now a healthy girl, Elle is ready to find her very own furever family.
MEDICAL 🩺Elle arrived with no records and so we don't know her age or date of birth, but believe she is around 6 years old. She is now a healthy girl who is up to date on vaccinations, spayed, had a recent dental with 14 extractions, is microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. Her eyes, knees, and hips are clear while her baseline echocardiogram revealed just very mild mitral valve disease (MVD), with otherwise normal parameters. She is due for a recheck echocardiogram in August 2027 to monitor if there has been any progression. Otherwise, she is a healthy girl who is not on any medication and does not require any additional vetting at this time beyond her routine wellness care and scheduled cardiac recheck.
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘Precious Elle is typical in size and at her ideal weight of 18 pounds. She is a beautiful blenheim girl who absolutely loves mealtime, just like a typical Cavalier. She eats 1/3 cup of Fromm kibble for breakfast anddinner, with her meals served around 7am and 5pm. Since she has lost quite a few teeth following her recent dental, her foster family adds a little water to her dry food, to soften it a little bit as she seems to prefer it that way. Elle also enjoys her Fromm Crunchy Os treats, along with healthy snacks like carrots, blueberries, celery, cucumber, watermelon, and apples. She has even learned from her foster siblings that dinner time is joyfully announced with lots of barking!
Elle has been impressive with her potty habits. She goes outside first thing after breakfast, last thing before bed, and every few hours throughout the day including immediately after meals to ensure potty training success. She has even learned how to use the doggy door and will come and go on her own when she needs to use the restroom. While she is now reliable in her foster home, accidents should always be expected initially while she transitions into a new home, environment, and routine. Because she is a food motivated girl, a special high value treat immediately following good potty behavior will be excellent reward and reinforcement for her.
PERSONALITY 💕Elle is truly the sweetest girl and she loves being around both her people and other pups, but she can initially be timid and shy. She responds especially well to gentle attention and affection when her person is sitting on the sofa or chair with her, or crouches down in front of her to give her scratches under the chin. But the best way to win her over is to go for her belly - she absolutely loves having her belly rubbed and will roll over and stretch out as far as she possibly can to give you plenty of room to scratch the whole thing. Elle's favorite things include belly rubs, yak chews, and other hard bone chews. She has occasionally been known to carry a soft toy around, although she seems to view most soft toys as pillows rather than play things. She will occasionally run and play chase with her younger Cavalier foster sibling, but this is rare. Most of the time, she is happiest simply just being with her people and pup friends and watching the activity around her. She also has the sweetest crooked-tooth grin and an adorably loud tail thump when she is perched on the back of the sofa greeting you.
ROUTINE ⏰Elle starts her day with a quick trip outside for potty, breakfast around 7am, and then immediately heads back outside to potty, sniff, and explore. Once she's back inside, she likes to check up on what everyone is doing before settling down for her first nap of the day, usually on the back of the sofa, her favorite perching spot. She then spends much of the day with her foster family enjoying a leisurely day of naps, following her people around, and trips outside for fresh air and sunshine. In typical Cavalier fashion, Elle wants to be wherever her people are and loves simply being included in whatever everyone is doing. During short periods of time when there are no humans at home, Elle stays with her Cavalier foster siblings in a safe, puppy proofed, gated-off area of the downstairs. She patiently waits by the gate when her people step away and does not show signs of separation anxiety. There, she has plenty of space, comforts, and companionship and does well left for short periods of time, although she is certainly happiest being with her people and so we are seeking a family where she will have low alone time.
Dinner is at 5pm, followed by another potty break and sniffing session outside. Afterward, she hangs out with her people and pup friends throughout the evening, shifting her napping spot as she deems necessary. Her final potty trip outside is usually around 10:30pm before she heads to bed. She sleeps in the big bed where she is happiest being close to her people and sleeps well knowing she is safe and sound next to you. We are seeking a family who will continue to invite her into the big bed and provide pet steps up to the bed so she can safely get on and off.
SOCIALIZATION 💜Elle is a sweet girl who can be curiously timid when meeting new people. Once she is provided ample time to warm up to you and sees that you are safe and good, she is happy to accept your gentle attention and affection. She is already a bit hand shy but she is also hard of hearing, and so sudden, unanticipated movements are the main thing that startles her - it is important that you are slow and intentional with your movement and that she sees and acknowledges your hand before you go to reach for her. Because she is timid and can be easily startled, we feel Elle would do best in an adult-only home or a home with older, gentle children (ages 12+) who understand how to approach and engage with her and respect her space and boundaries. Her foster family's children are 13 and 15 and understand the importance of being gentle and patient with her.
While timid with people, Elle absolutely LOVES other dogs and has gotten along beautifully with every Cavalier that she has met in rescue. She is very friendly and enjoys meeting new canine furiends. We are seeking a home with at least one other Cavalier, or other dog of similar size and gentle temperament as she benefits greatly from having a canine sibling for both companionship and leadership who will help show her the ropes and give her confidence as she continues to navigate her new life. Her ideal canine companion would be another gentle, mild-mannered adult Cavalier who will welcome her in with open paws, allow her to follow on their paws, and invite her in for close cuddles. Elle briefly encountered a cat in our care and was appropriate. We expect that she would do fine living with a dog friendly feline in the home.
Leash walking is brand new to Elle and something she is just not comfortable with or ready for. It is important to introduce this to her when it can be a positive and confidence building experience for her instead of it being a scary and traumatizing experience for her, which it is now. Her family should not push this on her and instead Elle needs a safe and secured fenced yard for pottying purposes and so she can continue to enjoy her outdoor freedom in. While it is not safe for her to be on leash at this time, she does enjoy car rides and this provides her with a wonderful opportunity for safe outings and adventures outside of the home. She rides safely and comfortably in her boosted car seat and almost immediately settles and goes right to sleep. We are seeking a family who will provide her with these opportunities and will include her in their daily activities and outings.
IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡Most importantly, Elle needs a loving family who will be patient with her, give her the time she needs to build confidence, and make her an included and important member of the family. She wants to be wherever her people are and would do best and be happiest in a family where someone is home much of the day where she will have low alone time and plenty of quality time with her people. Perhaps her biggest need and want though is at least one other furry furiend who can provide her with both the companionship and leadership that she needs. Because she is not yet comfortable on a leash, she requires a safe and secured fenced yard in her furever home. Her family will need to provide for her pet steps to safely access the bed and couch and a boosted car seat so she can continue to ride safely and comfortably in the car. Lastly, her family should live within driving distance to a veterinary cardiologist and be able to provide for her ongoing cardiac care and monitoring.
