MEET GEORGIA 💜
Beautiful Georgia is one of the 35+ Cavaliers rescued out of an Alabama puppy mill on Sunday. We were not provided any records on the dogs but believe Georgia is about 4 years old. She, like many of the others, is on the smaller side weighing 14 pounds. She underwent her full intake vetting earlier this week.
Poor Georgia really got the brunt of all the parasites - the fleas and lice were crawling all over her and are likely the source and cause of her severe bacterial skin infections. She is covered in skin wounds from the top of her head all the way down to her legs - some dry and scabbing, others open and oozey. We decided to take a sample and send it off for culture so we can find out exactly what kind of bacterial organisms are present and therefore, know exactly the most effective way to treat it. With the filth she was living in, there’s no telling what organisms will be detected 🦠 While we await those culture results, we’ve started her on an oral antibiotic, a topical antibiotic, medicated shampoo and spray, and she received a cytopoint injection to help with some itching relief. The poor girl has been so uncomfortable for so long. The infection has caused an elevation in her white blood cells and her lymph nodes to be enlarged.
We are also treating her for hookworms and giardia which have wreaked havoc on her GI tract. The hookworms have been feeding on blood from her intestines for probably years now and have caused her anemia. Additionally, we are treating her for ear and eye infections.
The younger pups were very lucky to get out of this place when they did, else this would have been them in a few years 💔
Sweet Georgia will need a dental and spay once we get her parasitic infections and bacterial eye, ear, and skin infections well under control. She is due to return to the vet in 2 weeks for a recheck to ensure she’s responding well to all her medications and showing good improvement.
Despite her suffering, she’s the sweetest girl who is just so happy and so thankful to have been rescued 🙏🏻 Georgia is being fostered in Montgomery, Alabama 💜
JULY 3 , 2024: Check out this #TransformationTuesday 💫 When sweet Georgia was rescued out of the puppy mill just 3 weeks ago her little body was covered in wounds - some scabbed, some open, crusty, bleeding, oozing, itchy, painful, and uncomfortable. These wounds were the result of a secondary bacterial infection caused by parasite infestation and living in complete filth 😡 To be sure we worked as quickly and effectively as possible to get this girl relief, we sent out a Culture & Sensitivity Test to learn exactly what kind of bacterial organisms were present 🦠 and what antibiotics would be most effective in treating them. In additional to her oral antibiotics, she’s been getting medicated baths 🛁 , and topical care with sprays and antibiotic ointments. Her skin has responded beautifully to the targeted care 🎯 and just 2 weeks later her wounds are healing beautifully 🙌🏼 Most importantly, she is so much more comfortable and can now truly enjoy her second chance at life! 💕We also sent off a fecal test to ensure she the hookworms have been completely eradicated, and rechecked her CBC hoping to see improvements of her white blood count being down since the infection has been treated and her anemia improved since the parasites have been treated. We are awaiting the results and will be sure to let you know! As long as all comes back as expected, we will soon move forward with her spay and much needed dental.
AUGUST 11 , 2024: Georgia waiting on her skin culture results like…. ⏰ After treating sweet miss Georgia for staphylococcus pseudintermedius and enterococcus faecalis 🦠, we are hoping to get the all clear from her culture results that her bacterial skin infections have been all cleared up 🙏🏻 We should have the results by mid week. 4 year old Georgia was rescued out of an Alabama puppy mill and is being fostered in Montgomery, Alabama 💜
AUGUST 22, 2024: Despite sweet Georgia’s skin looking and feeling soooooo much better following treatment for skin infections, she is still growing bacterial organisms on her skin cultures 🧫 including staphylococcus, enterococcus, and gram negative rods 🦠 and so it was time to seek the help of a dermatologist…Earlier this week, Georgia had a great visit with Alabama Veterinary Allergy & Dermatology who have started her on more aggressive antibiotic therapy which will hopefully finally kick these organisms to the curb 💥 She will return in a month for a recheck to assess her response to her new treatment plan 🙏🏻
