When you get the top photo of a 5 POUND ADULT Cavalier ๐ who was just surrendered to a vet clinic and youโre asked if you can take him, you race to secure him!
Welcome in, Goose ๐ชฟ a 5 pound 1 and a half year old boy (DOB 7/2/2022). At this time we donโt have any reason to believe his poor body condition is due to anything except for neglect/ malnourishment. He was also completely infested with fleas.
Thank you to our wonderful Mississippi volunteer for answering the call and for securing this poor baby. He made the short trip over to Louisiana today and has arrived to his foster home in Baton Rouge ๐ก He will undergo his full intake vetting first thing tomorrow morning and we should have more information to bring you soon ๐ In the meantime, heโs getting lots of food and TLC ๐

DECEMBER 11, 2023: Little Goose ๐ชฟ underwent his intake vetting on Thursday but we are still ,\awaiting all of his labwork results so we will share his full medical update on Monday ๐ In the meantime, heโs setting beautifully into his foster home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana ๐ก where his foster mom reports that he is doing so great! He is eating like a champ, is feeling playful and zesty, and soaking up all the love and cuddles ๐ We are very encouraged! ๐๐ปGoose is not yet available for adoption and will not be for quite some time. Our only priority right now is getting him strong and healthy ๐ช๐ฝ so we ask that you please refrain from contacting us with your interest at this time. Thank you for understanding ๐ฅฐ
DECEMBER 15,2023: Oh, little Goose ๐ชฟ Thank goodness we learned of him when we did as sadly he was close to running out of time ๐ His condition tells a heartbreaking tale of neglect and malnourishment that he has likely endured for his entire year and a half of life. He is emaciated and clocked in at just 5.6 pounds at his intake vetting. He is gobbling up every meal like itโs his last and we are being very careful with his refeeding plan to ensure he is able to safely receive nourishment and gain weight. Part of the problem is that he is riddled with worms and parasites which are wreaking havoc on his little body. These are parasites he has likely suffered with his entire life from living in filthy conditions. He is now undergoing treatment to finally rid him of them. He was also infested with fleas when we picked him up which in addition to the discomfort they have caused him, they have also been sucking his blood and have now caused him significant anemia. His audible heart murmur that was detected is also likely due to the anemia. He has been put on an iron and multivitamin supplement to help support and boost him and we will be rechecking his CBC in a couple weeks to ensure things are moving in the right direction. It will take some time for him and his systems to make a full recovery but we will be tracking his progress with regular rechecks. By a miracle, he tested negative for heartworms and tick borne illnessess, and if we are looking for other good takeaways, his urinalysis was normal, and seems to be orthopedically sound with clear knees and hips. When he is strong and healthy, Goose will need a neuter and a dental cleaning with extractions of some retained baby teeth. Right now priority is safely gaining weight, ridding him of worms and parasites, and seeing his bloodwork moving in the right direction. We will be sure to keep you posted on his progress and are certainly looking forward to a really amazing transformation to come ๐ Rest assured, this little man is getting his every need met and receiving endless TLC in his foster home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He may be a Goose, but heโs also a really lucky duck ๐๐ป

DECEMBER 27, 2023: Ladies and gentlemen - welcome to the main event! ๐ฅ In this corner, wearing blue ๐, and weighing in at 7.7 pounds ๐ช๐ฝ , is the undefeated lightweight championnnnnnnn โฆ. GOOSE!!! ๐
We are so happy to share that little Goose in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is up 2 whole pounds since his intake just 3 weeks ago ๐๐ผ We suspected that his condition was due to starvation, malnutrition, and neglect๐ and that seems to be the case as he is gaining weight well ๐๐ป We are awaiting his recheck fecal results to ensure weโve successfully eradicated all his parasites, and we will post a full medical update once those results are in ๐
JANUARY 15, 2024: Warning โ ๏ธ Thereโs a Goose on the loose in Baton Rouge ๐ชฟ๐ ๐พ
JANUARY 23, 2024: Little one and half year old Goose๐ชฟ came into our care emaciated, malnourished, and with severe anemia. An audible heart murmur was detected ๐ฉบ which we felt was likely due to the anemia. As his anemia has now resolved ๐๐ผ we wanted to have his heart thoroughly assessed to ensure there were no other abnormalities that contributed to the audible murmur. So today he underwent a cardiac evaluation and echocardiogram at LSU โค๏ธWe are pleased to report that the audible murmur has now diminished and that his heart was found to be normal and healthy! This clears him for the final thing on his medical checklist which is his neuter surgery and a dental to remove some retained baby teeth. We will be moving forward with scheduling this โ๏ธ
FEBRUARY 22 , 2024 Little Goose in Baton Rouge, Louisiana recently had some additional testing done through the gastrointestinal lab at Texas A&M and we just received those results back ๐งช
The results reveal that he does not have EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) like was possibly suspected, but that his Cobalamin (B12) and Folate levels were off. Measurements of cobalamin and folate in serum are useful for diagnosing and characterizing malabsorptive disorders of the small intestine of dogs.
Particularly, his Cobalamin was low โฌ๏ธ and his Folate was high โฌ๏ธ which is indicative of small intestinal dysbiosis, also known as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). SIBO is responsive to antibiotics which is typically the therapy of choice. This explains why Goose was able to put on weight quickly and easily when he first came into rescue and was on antibiotics to treat his other ailments. Once off antibiotics, we saw a stall in his weight gain and the return of some GI symptoms.
Thankfully, there is a very effective antibiotic (Tylosin) for this that is safe for long term use and comes with very low side effects. Goose will be starting a low dose of Tylosin and as well as a B12 supplement to help boost his Cobalamin levels โ๏ธ
We feel weโve just figured out a big piece of the puzzle ๐งฉ and are very hopeful that this management plan will greatly improve his overall gut health and ability to absorb nutrients, making it possible for him to get big and strong ๐ช๐ฝ Once heโs been on his new management plan for some time, we will be sure to let you know how itโs going ๐๐ป

APRIL 1 , 2024 Goosey ๐ชฟ is still holding steady at 8.6 pounds as we continue to work to get him to about 10 pounds which we feel is his ideal weight. After his recent diagnosis of a malabsorption disorder of his small intestine, we have introduced a cobalamin supplement to help boost his b12 levels, and a low dose antibiotic to treat his intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Since starting this, we have seen some positive improvements with his stool ๐๐ผ and are continuing to make some tweaks and adjustments. He returns to the vet later this month for a recheckโ๏ธ Of course, we will continue to bring you pupdates in the meantime ๐
APRIL 4 , 2024 โ ๏ธ GOOSE CROSSING ๐ชฟโ ๏ธ
APRIL 22 , 2024 Cue the confetti ๐ ๐๐๐Goose has hit his 10 pound goal! ๐๐ผHe now officially weighs DOUBLE ๐ช๐ฝ what he did when he arrived a completed emaciated 5 pound skeleton of a dog back in December! We are feeling good about the management plan he is on for his malabsorptive disorder of his small intestine which consists of a hydrolized protein food, daily probiotic, cobalamin supplement, and Tylosin (antibiotic) for his bacterial overgrowth. We will be rechecking his Cobalamin and Folate levels on 5/21 which will be 3 months since starting his management plan. 3 months ago his Cobalamin level was low, and Folate level was high and we are hoping to see those now in the normal range, which will really just confirm that weโve got things all figured out! ๐

MAY 22 , 2024: Goose with the gains ๐ช๐ฝ Hard to believe we are having to cut back on his portions! The goal will be to keep him around 11 pounds which we feel is his ideal weight โ๏ธ
Today he had blown drawn to check his Cobalamin and Folate levels to see if we need to make any adjustments to his supplementation. We are awaiting those results. Otherwise, we feel like weโve got this sweet boy well managed and right on track ๐
