MEET HARRY πΆ
We recently welcomed in sweet Harry - a darling 8 month old boy (DOB 3/10/2024) who came to us as an owner surrender due to the owner's health issues making it difficult to continue his care and meet his needs. Harry has transitioned into rescue nicely and is living his best puppy life in his foster home in Lebanon, Missouri. He is now ready to find his perfect furever family!
MEDICAL π©Ί
Little Harry is now up to date on vaccinations, neutered, microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. All of his labwork including his fecal test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, urinalysis, and bloodwork is now normal and negative. Additionally, we found his eyes, knees, hips, and heart to be clear and congenitally sound at this time. Common for puppies, he has epiphora, or excessive tearing which leaves the fur under his eyes wet much of the time. It is important to keep the fur and skin under his eyes as dry as possible by gently blotting frequently as moisture on the fur and skin can create bacterial and yeast overgrowth. Otherwise, Harry is a healthy young boy!
FOOD & POTTY HABITS π₯
8 month old Harry is a growing boy currently weighing 11 pounds and continuing to fill out nicely with excellent care and good groceries. He is eating his Fromm puppy kibble twice a day and is not (yet) very food motivated - he often needs help and encouragement to stay engaged during mealtime. We have noticed that he does better with shallow dishes with low sides rather than having to stick his head into a taller bowl. He eats alongside his Cavalier foster siblings with no issues but because he is a slow eater, supervision is needed at mealtime to ensure no one encroaches upon his bowl. Harry should continue on his puppy kibble through 12 months of age and then can transition to an adult recipe. We will send him home with a bag of his food and favorite treats.
Harry is a typical pup learning potty expectations and has been very good about going potty outside when taken out. Puppies have very tiny bladders and need to be taken out very frequently - first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every hour or so throughout the day including right after meals and immediately after waking up from naps, to ensure continued potty training success. Harry is being let out into the fenced yard for pottying and will do best in a home with a well maintained, safe, and secured fenced yard. A special high value treat and gentle love and praise immediately following good potty behavior will be excellent reward and reinforcement for him. Even though Harry is doing excellent with his potty training, please understand that continued potty training will be required and ongoing for quite some time. There will be accidents, especially initially as he learns a new environment and routine.
PERSONALITY π
Harry's foster family describes him as a typical puppy who seems to have endless bundles of energy! But he is also very sweet, cuddly, and is a fun, adventurous, and overall happy boy! He will play and play until he wears himself out and then naps and recharges for the next round! When he is tired, he becomes a sweet snuggly puppy and loves a good cuddle with you. Some of his favorite things are fetching his toys, running as fast as possible around the yard, and enjoying a gentle massage while he relaxes in your lap! In true Cavalier fashion, the most important thing to him is companionship and he values the people and furry furiends in his life and time spent together. He very much wants to be included in all activities and does not like to be alone or left out. He has also proven to be quite a clever boy who has already learned his name and some verbal commands like 'sit' and 'off'. He is most receptive to a positive, encouraging tone of voice and gentle praise.
ROUTINE β°
Harry's day starts with a trip outside in the yard for pottying, a short leashed walk around the neighborhood and then breakfast. After breakfast he goes back out for pottying and play and then spends the rest of the day doing what his foster family is doing - 'helping' with chores, running errands with foster mom, or playing until he runs out of steam. Because he is a young pup, he needs plenty of opportunity for activity, play, stimulation, and interaction. He needs to stay busy with appropriate toys, games, and activities to help expend his puppy energy. During the short periods of time when no humans are home, Harry stays in a puppy proofed gated off area of the home with his Cavalier foster siblings. There he is kept away from being tempted to chew things he shouldn't and safely away from any potential dangers or trouble. He has plenty of space, comforts and companionship. Harry does well left for short periods of time, but is of course happiest being with his people and having lots of opportunity for activity, attention, and play and so we are seeking a family where someone is able to be with him much of the day and where he will have low alone time. He does not do well being strictly confined, like in a crate, and he does not do well being separated from his siblings.
In the evenings, Harry goes for a longer leashed walk and then it's dinner time. After dinner, he is taken out to potty and then spends the rest of the evening relaxing with his foster family. After last potty outside, it's time for bed where Harry is invited into the big bed to sleep with his foster family and Cavalier siblings. After a full day of fun and play, he sleeps well throughout the night cuddled up close to his people. He would not do well being asked to sleep apart from you and so ee are seeking a family who will continue to allow him into the big bed with them, where every Cavalier belongs. Pet steps should be available so he can safely get on and off the bed as jumping should be discouraged.
SOCIALIZATION π
We don't think that Harry has had a lot of human socialization opportunities as he is cautious and weary when meeting new people, but warms up once given ample time to inspect you and once shown gentle love. In fact, he is quite cautious, alert, and aware of any changes to his surroundings like a piece of trash blowing in the wind, or something put on the floor that usually isn't there, etc. His response is to stop, look to his person for reassurance, and then bravely investigate the situation. He definitely looks to his person and his Cavalier foster siblings to see how he should react or respond - if he observes that everyone else is calm, then he believes that everything is okay. Positive human interactions and experiences are crucial at this time for his socialization and so he should have plenty of gentle and positive opportunities to meet and interact with people. He has been practicing his leash walking which gives him more opportunity to experience and get more comfortable with the big world around him. He is still startled by moving vehicles, loud or unexpected noises, and encountering people and animals and so it would be best and safest to continue practicing in a more quiet neighborhood with low traffic. He is a wonderful car rider and enjoys car rides in his safe and comfy Snoozer car seat. He would love to be able to tag along with you whenever he can!
Harry desperately wants his Cavalier foster siblings to play with him but they are too old for his puppy shenanigans! He values canine companionship and leadership and looks to his furry furiends to know what to do, where to go, and how to behave. He very much needs another young, active, playful canine furiend in his furever home who will welcome his puppy antics and engage in play with him. His ideal match would be another young Cavalier or other dog of similar size and temperament who enjoys playing and sharing toys, romping, wrestling, and playing chase and tug of war with him and can match his energy level. He would not be a good match for an older, senior, or more inactive dog as he would be 'too much' for them. He has encountered cats at the vet clinic and was unbothered and so he would likely do fine with a dog friendly feline in the home.
IDEAL HOME & FAMILY π‘
Most importantly, Harry needs a family who will shower him with so much love and attention and make him an included and important member of their family. He needs a patient, loving family to help teach and guide him on how to be the best puppy he can be, and who has the time to love him and train him. Because puppies need a lot of stimulation, attention, engagement, and activity, we are looking for a family who is able to be with him much of the day to allow for plenty of opportunity for activity, socialization, and for staying the course with his potty training. Harry has done well interacting with gentle children and we feel he would do well in an active adult only home or a home with well behaved children with dog experience who know how to engage with him gently and appropriately, and know they must keep their things out of puppy reach. He needs a playful canine furiend for both leadership and companionship, and needs a home with a well maintained yard and safe and secured fence for pottying and so that he can continue to enjoy his outdoor freedom - the more room for him to run the better! Please understand that he is small at 11 pounds and fences that are not βprivacyβ will need to be secured and reinforced as he can fit through narrow spaces.
In addition to a safe outdoor area for pottying and play, we will also be looking for a very "puppy proofed" home as puppies will be puppies and will get into everything they can. Like a toddler, everything goes straight into his mouth! Anything within reach of the pup is up for grabs and so ensuring that the yard and inside of the home can and will be well maintained for his safety is imperative. He will also need to be protected from any railings that he may be able to squeeze through. Puppies are fearless and will not understand dangers, so his new family must be diligent to keep him safe. We will also ask that there are pet steps to the furniture so that he can safely get on and off.
