MEET JAKE 🐶
Precious Jake came into our care as a breeder release after being retired from a life of breeding, and just celebrated his 9th birthday in foster care (DOB 4/15/2016). He arrived into our care matted, underweight, and neglected, but has transformed into an adorable little teddy bear right before our eyes, with a darling personality to boot! While he has been an absolute pleasure to have in rescue, he is now ready to find his perfect furever family!
MEDICAL 🩺
Jake is now a healthy boy! He is up to date in vaccinations, neutered, had a recent dental, is microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. All of his labwork including his fecal test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, urinalysis, and bloodwork is now normal and negative. Additionally, his eyes, knees, hips, and heart! are all clear and congenitally sound at this time. He is not on any medication and does not require any additional vetting outside of regular wellness checks at this time. He is in great health, especially for a 9 year old.
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘
Jake is typical in size and now at his ideal weight of 16.8 pounds, which must be at least a couple pounds of floof! After arriving matted up requiring a big cut, his ruby red coat has grown out beautifully with the excellent care and groceries he is receiving. Like most Cavaliers, Jake is a foodie and is very eager and enthusiastic for his twice a day meals. He also loves treats and doesn't have a picky palate! His adopting family must remain committed to continuing his strictly portioned meals, healthy treats, and daily exercise/activity to ensure he remains at his ideal weight, best health and best self!
Jake has been impressive with his potty training and is now reliable in his foster home! He is such a good, smart boy who has learned routines and expectations quickly, with the help of his spaniel foster siblings. Jake is let out into the fenced yard for pottying and is given plenty of opportunities outside to be successful. He should be taken out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between including right after meals, to ensure continued potty training success. A special high value treat immediately following good outside potty behavior will be excellent reward and reinforcement for this food motivated boy! While Jake is reliable in his foster home, accidents are always to be expected, especially initially while he transitions to another environment and routine.
PERSONALITY 💕
Jake's foster family describes him as a happy, sweet, fun-loving, cuddly boy! His foster mom says, "if I am lying on the sofa, he will walk up my body and then press and smoosh his little face right into mine!" He is always good for a good cuddle and snooze session. He also loves belly rubs - "he will flop down right in front of you and expects you to rub his belly until your arms fall off!" What a silly boy! While at age 9, he is more snuggly and cuddly than he is playful, he will still sometimes carry and toss his favorite toys around or play fetch outside. Overall, he is a laid back, easy dog who just wants someone to love him... and feed him... and rub his belly!
ROUTINE ⏰
Jake starts his day going outside to potty and then back in for breakfast and more outside time for pottying and play. On days where his foster family is working from home, he makes himself comfortable in the home office on a comfy dog bed and is the perfect coworker as he snoozes while they work. Every few hours, he is let out into the yard for pottying and fresh air and is great about following his spaniel foster siblings outside and taking care of potty business. During short periods of time when there are no humans at home, Jake and his furry foster siblings stay in a gated off puppy proofed area of the home where he has plenty of space, comforts, and companionship. He has not been crated or otherwise strictly confined in our care as he does not need to be and we don't recommend that he is. He does well left for short periods of time but is of course happiest being with his people and so we are seeking a family where someone is able to be with him much of the day and where he will have low alone time.
After dinner, Jake hangs out with his foster family on the sofa where he enjoys quality cuddle time until it's time for last potty outside before bed. Jake is invited up into the big bed and uses pet steps to safely get on and off the bed which should be available to him in his furever home. He loves sharing a pillow with his foster mom and sleeps peacefully throughout the night knowing he is safe and sound close to you. He would not do well being asked to sleep apart from his people and so we are seeking a family who will continue to welcome him into the big bed with them and embrace his sweet snuggles.
SOCIALIZATION 💜
Jake is a friendly, social boy who enjoys meeting people and getting love, attention, and belly rubs from all willing to give it to him! He is not shy about asking for a rub and will plop down and roll over right in front of you! While he can be alerted to loud, new, or startling noises, we have not found him to be scared or fearful of much of anything at all. We feel he would do well in an adult only home or a home with older, gentle, well behaved children who have dog experience and know how to engage with him gently and respect his space and boundaries.
Jake shares his foster home with 3 other spaniels and became fast furiends with them and a part of the pack. While he doesn't engage them in play, he can often be found sharing a comfy dog bed with them, especially if a human lap is unavailable. He has a lovely temperament and has gotten along wonderfully with every Cavalier he has met in rescue. We know he would be happy and do great with another laid back, mild mannered adult Cavalier or other dog of similar temperament in the home, but we also feel like we could do okay as an only dog in the home as long as he could be with his person most all of the time and have very low alone time. Otherwise, if there is regular alone time, he would do best having the company of a furry furiend. He has not been exposed to any cats while in our care so we are unsure how he would do sharing a home with a cat.
Jake has not had much leash walking experience and is still a bit unsure and uncomfortable being on a leash. With continued slow, safe, gentle, and positive exposure he should continue to get more comfortable and will likely come to enjoy a leisurely outing and stroll with his family. He is a great traveler and rides safely and comfortably in his boosted car seat which we will ask that his family get for him so we can tag along with you as much as possible, which would make him very happy.
IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡
Most importantly, Jake needs a loving, committed family who has the time and ability to shower him with so much love and attention and make him an included and important member of the family. Therefore, we are seeking a family where someone can be with him much of the day and provide for him plenty of opportunities for quality time with his people - which includes couch cuddles and belly rubs of course! We are also seeking a home with a safe and secured fenced yard for pottying purposes and so Jake can continue enjoying his outdoor freedom in - he loves wandering around the yard and pawtroling for birds and squirrels. He would do great with another laid back, mild, gentle furry furiend for companionship.
