Aloha, Kalani & Malia 🌺Kalani and Malia are 1.5 year old sisters (DOB 9/24/2024) who we were recently asked to welcome into rescue after an individual unexpectedly acquired them while picking up a Cavalier they planned to add to their family.When the seller offered the girls to them as well, they were immediately struck by the condition of their eyes and knew they were in obvious need of medical care and intervention. Unable to turn away from that need, they brought the girls to safety and thankfully reached out to us for help.Their eyes were in terrible shape when we picked them up (see middle photo) - crusted over with thick green discharge and so painful they could barely keep them open. To no surprise, their tear tests revealed that both girls had no tear production at all, resulting in secondary infection, significant inflammation, corneal scarring, and a whole lot of discomfort. We immediately started them on an intensive regimen of eye medications to treat infection, reduce inflammation, stimulate tear production, and provide much needed lubrication and moisture to their painfully dry eyes. While it will take a considerable amount of time and ongoing care to restore their eyes, we are already seeing encouraging improvement and, most importantly, the girls are visibly much more comfortable 🙌🏼Kalani & Malia are smaller in size at 12 and 13 pounds, and otherwise checked out with clear knees, hips, and hearts. Thankfully their heartworm and tick borne illness test was negative, and their urinalysis and bloodwork were normal. However, their fecal test was positive for giardia, a nasty intestinal parasite commonly found in filthy environments, and are currently receiving treatment for it. The girls will return to the vet later this week for a recheck before moving forward with their spay surgeries soon.Our little Hawaii princesses are bonded and are being fostered together in St. Simons Island, Georgia 🏝️ Their foster mom reports that they are happy girls who so sweet and silly together 💜

UPDATE JUNE 16, 2026: Kalani & Malia, our 1 year old sisters, in St. Simons Island, Georgia, strolled into their post-op recheck appointment and rolled out with excellent reports! 💜
Both girls are fully healed from their spay surgeries and were able to receive their distemper/parvo vaccines after their titer testing showed they were not protected. They’re now up to date on vaccinations, spayed, had a recent dental, are microchipped, on monthly preventatives, have normal and negative labwork, and clear knees, hips, and hearts. 
But as you may remember, Kalani and Malia arrived in our care with painfully severe dry eyes, not producing any tears. They’ve been on an eye drop regimen to help stimulate tear production, reduce inflammation, improve their comfort, and protect their vision, and will be seeing the ophthalmologist in two weeks for a re-evaluation 🙏🏻
In the meantime, these sweet and silly sisters are enjoying life in their foster home and soaking up all the love and care they deserve 💕
