MEET LANCE πΆ
Back in June, little Lancelot was rescued out of a filthy, hot Alabama puppy mill. We were not provided any records or information on the dogs so we do not know his exact date of birth, but believe he was about 4 months old when rescued, and is now about 6-7 months of age. Lance is so lucky to have been rescued at a young age and now has the amazing opportunity at a healthy, happy, and long furever after! He has already figured out how to live his best puppy life in foster care and is now ready to find his perfect furever family of his very own!
MEDICAL π©Ί
Little Lance now weighs 9 pounds and is filling out nicely with excellent care and groceries. He is up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. Lance will need to be neutered when age appropriate, which per our adoption agreement is by 12 months of age (by February 2025). He was treated for parasites, eye infections, and ear infections in our care. His fecal test and heartworm and tick borne illness test is negative and his bloodwork reflects normal puppy 'wonkiness'. Lance's knees, hips, and heart are clear and congenitally sound but he arrived into our care with low tear production. He has been under the care of our ophthalmologist and his tear production is now within normal limits. He will likely need to remain on his twice a day tear stimulant eye drop medication for life to maintain this adequate tear production and should continue to be monitored by an ophthalmologist. Otherwise, Lance is a healthy young boy!
FOOD & POTTY HABITS π₯
Lance is a great eater and always licks his bowl clean! He enjoys his three times a day Fromm puppy kibble meals and plenty of healthy treats throughout the day for being the wonderful puppy that he is - he loves apples, bananas, and peaches! Supervision is needed at mealtime to ensure everyone stays at their own bowl. Lance should continue on his puppy kibble through 12 months of age and then can transition to an adult recipe. We will send him home with a bag of his puppy food and favorite treats.
Lance is a typical pup learning potty training and has been very good about going potty outside when taken out. Puppies have very tiny bladders and need to be taken out very frequently - first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every hour or so throughout the day including right after meals and immediately after waking up from naps, to ensure continued potty training success. He isn't having an overnight accidents, but does need to be rushed outside first thing when he wakes up. Lance is being let out into a safe and secured fenced yard for pottying and will need a home with a well maintained, safe, and secured fenced yard. Because he is very food motivated, a special high value treat immediately following good potty behavior will be excellent reward and reinforcement for him as he continues to learn what is expected of him. Please understand that continued potty training will be required and ongoing for quite some time. There will be accidents, especially initially as he learns a whole new environment and routine.
PERSONALITY π
Lance's foster family describe him as a pistol - he is spunky, playful, and adventurous! They say, "he has a ton of energy and can quickly go from playing chase with another dog, to chewing on a bone, to leaping on the couch for some TLC!" He also loves being outside in the yard where he will independently explore and search for the perfect stick or leaf to play with. He is a lover of toys, ice cubes, roughhousing with the other boys in the house, and is a known shoe thief (flip flops are his favorite!) He is a typical puppy in that he will play and play until he wears himself out and then naps and recharges for the next round. When he's tired, he becomes a snuggly puppy and loves a good cuddle with you!
ROUTINE β°
Lance's day starts with a trip outside in the yard for pottying, then back inside for breakfast, then back out for play! He loves to be outside running, exploring, and hunting for sticks and squirrels! He spends much of the day with his foster family where it's eat, play, nap, on repeat throughout the day! He goes outside every hour or so for pottying, play, fresh air, and sunshine in the fenced yard. During the short periods of time when no humans are home, Lance stays in a puppy proofed gated off area of the home with his Cavalier foster siblings. There he is kept away from being tempted to chew things he shouldn't and safely away from any potential dangers or trouble. He has plenty of space, comforts and companionship. Lance does well left for short periods of time, but is of course happiest being with his people and having lots of opportunity for activity, attention, and play and so we are seeking a family where someone is able to be with him much of the day and where he will have low alone time. Lance has not been crated or otherwise strictly confined since being in our care - he does not need to be and we do not recommend that he is due to his past history of confinement.
After dinner, it's time to go potty and then more play! When it is time for bed, he is taken out for final pottying and then uses pet steps to get onto the big bed. After a full day of fun and play, he sleeps well throughout the night cuddled up close to one of his Cavalier foster siblings. He does not have overnight accidents but must be taken out right before bed and then rushed outside first thing in the morning when he wakes up. We are seeking a family who will continue to allow him into the big bed with them, where every Cavalier belongs.
SOCIALIZATION π
Since Lance missed out on socialization the first 4 months of his life, he can still be slightly timid and cautious when meeting new people, but warms up very quickly once shown gentle love. He is very curious about new people and will approach but then startles when reached for. It is best to slowly introduce your hands to him and give him ample time to feel comfortable and safe. Loud noises will also get his attention and startle him but he recovers quickly. He is getting more and more comfortable with people, noises, and the world around him every day! We feel he would do well in an active adult only home or a home with gentle, well behaved children with dog experience who know how to love and engage with puppies appropriately and gently and know to keep their things out of puppy reach.
Positive human interactions and experiences are crucial at this time for his socialization and so he should have plenty of opportunities to meet and interact with people. He is not yet leash trained as he has had the freedom of a securely fenced yard, and so we will encourage his family to start gentle leash training so that he can get out and about and have more opportunities to expand his little world. For now, a carrier is recommended to tote him around to outings where he is able to be included. - he would love to be able to tag along with you whenever possible! He travels very well in the car in his Snoozer boosted car seat where he is safe and comfortable - we will ask that his family get one for him.
Lance loves his Cavalier foster siblings and gets along with them very well. He looks to them to know what to do, where to go, how to behave, and follows their lead. In addition to the leadership they provide for him, they also provide him with the canine companionship that he longs for. He very much needs another young, active, playful canine furiend in his furever home who will welcome him silly puppy antics and engage in play with him. His ideal match would be another young Cavalier or other dog of similar size and temperament who enjoys playing and sharing toys, romping, wrestling, and playing chase and tug of war with him. When he has run out of steam, he can be found cuddled up close to his furry furiends. He has not been exposed to any cats while in our care so we are unsure how he would do living with a cat in the home.
IDEAL HOME & FAMILY π‘
Most importantly, Lance needs a family who will shower him with so much love and attention and make him an included and important member of their family. He needs a patient, loving family to help teach and guide him on how to be the best puppy he can be, and who has the time to love and train him. Because puppies need a lot of stimulation, attention, engagement, and activity, we are looking for a family who is able to be with him much of the day to allow for plenty of opportunity for activity, socialization, and for staying the course with his potty training. He needs a playful canine furiend for both leadership and companionship, and needs a home with a well maintained yard and safe and secured fence for pottying and so that he can continue to enjoy his outdoor freedom. He loves to be outside and would love to find a family who would also enjoy spending time outdoors with him. Please understand that he is tiny at 9 pounds and fences that are not βprivacyβ will need to be secured and reinforced as he can fit through narrow spaces.
In addition to a safe outdoor area for pottying and play, we will also be looking for a very "puppy proofed" home as puppies will be puppies and will get into everything they can. Anything within reach of the pup is up for grabs and so ensuring that the yard and inside of the home can and will be well maintained for his safety is imperative. He will also need to be protected from any railings that he may be able to squeeze through. Puppies are fearless and will not understand dangers, so his new family must be diligent to keep him safe. We will also ask that there are pet steps to the furniture so that he can safely get on and off. Lastly, his family should live within reasonable driving distance to a veterinary ophthalmologist as Lance's eyes should be monitored to ensure he is continuing to respond well to his tear stimulant drop and that his tears are remaining within normal limits.
