MEET LILA 🐶Lila is one of nine Cavaliers that we recently rescued off the auction block - pulling her out of the puppy mill industry where she had spent her entire life being used as a puppy making machine. After years of reproductive abuse, neglect, suffering, and taking care of puppies, 4 year old Lila (DOB 10/21/2021) has embraced her new way of life in rescue and is now ready to find her perfect furever family.
MEDICAL 🩺Lila is now a healthy 4 year old girl! Her eyes, knees, hips, and heart were found to be clear and congenitally sound at this time. And all of her labwork including her fecal test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, urinalysis, and bloodwork is normal and negative. We treated her for ear infections and she also underwent her spay surgery and a dental (with 2 extractions) in our care. Lila is healthy, up to date on vaccinations, spayed, had a recent dental, is microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. She is not on any medication and does not require any additional vetting outside of regular wellness checks at this time.
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘Precious Lila is 22 pounds of marshmallow fluff! She is mostly white with unique blenheim markings that cover just one of her eyes. She was very badly stained when we rescued her, shedding light on the kind of environment she was forced to live in, but her pearly white coat is continuing to grow in beautifully now that she is receiving excellent care. Lila is eating and enjoying her twice a day meals and always licks her bowl clean. She eats with some distance between her and her spaniel foster siblings to help ensure everyone stays in at their own bowl. She has also been trying some different fruits and vegetables as treats and has proven to have a bit of a picky palette. Unlike many Cavaliers, she's not very food motivated. Her adopting family should remain committed to her portioned meals, healthy treats, and daily activity to ensure she remains at her ideal weight, best health, and best self.
Lila is off to a great start with her potty training as long as she is provided frequent opportunities outside to be successful. She is taken out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between including immediately after meals. She does not 'signal' or alert that she needs to go out to potty and so it is up to her people to take the initiative to take her out regularly and frequently. She is let out into the safe and secured fenced yard for pottying and is happy to go out as she enjoys being outside. Supervision is needed while she is outside to ensure she 'remembers' to go potty before she comes back in. Please understand that while Lila is now reliable in her foster home, accidents are always to be expected, especially initially while she transitions to another environment and routine.
PERSONALITY 💕Lila's foster family describe her as goofy, silly, sweet, and loving. It did not take long at all for Lila to discover the toy basket in her foster home, and she was hooked! She absolutely loves soft toys and will empty the entire basket searching for the perfect stuffy to play with. Outside she will hop after her toys and ball like a bunny! Having come from a puppy mill, Lila never had the opportunity to have toys, possessions, or any special items of her own. As a result, she wasn't quite sure initially how to navigate having something she valued and would sometimes growl if she had a toy and another dog came too close. But during her time in foster care, she has learned that her toys are always available to her, that the other dogs are of no threat to her and her toys, and has developed a healthy relationship with possessions. This may need to be reinforced initially in her furever home where new belongings may trigger some of these behaviors. There's only one thing Lila loves more than her toys, and that's her people! In true Cavalier fashion she is very sweet, loving, and affectionate, and is perfectly content to just snuggle and cuddle all day long. She loves to smoosh herself right on top of you and needs someone who will welcome and embrace her closeness. If you want personal space, Lila is not for you. Quality time with her person is very important to her and Lila's biggest need is just someone to love on her!
ROUTINE ⏰Lila starts her day going out in the yard to potty and then back in for breakfast and more outside time for pottying and playing with her toys. On days where her foster family is working from home, she makes herself comfortable in the home office on a comfy dog bed and is the perfect coworker as she snoozes while they work. Every few hours, she is let out into the yard for pottying and fresh air and is great about following her spaniel foster siblings outside and taking care of potty business. During short periods of time when there are no humans at home, Lila and her furry foster siblings stay together in a gated off puppy proofed area of the home where she has space, comforts, and companionship. She does well left for short periods of time but is of course happiest being with her people and so we are seeking a family where someone is able to be with her much of the day and where she will have low alone time.
After dinner, Lila hangs out with her foster family in the living area where they will play with her with her toys and then enjoy quality cuddle and TV time until it's time for last potty outside before bed. Lila is invited up into the big bed and uses pet steps to safely get on and off the bed which should be available to her in her furever home. She sleeps peacefully throughout the night knowing she is safe and sound close to you, as evident by her snoring. She would not do well being asked to sleep apart from her people and so we are seeking a family who will continue to welcome her and her sweet snores, into the big bed with them.
SOCIALIZATION 💜Despite her puppy mill past, Lila has been impressive with her socialization and overall confidence. She is friendly when meeting and interacting with people and is happy to receive gentle attention and affection from all willing to give it to her. She can still startle and scare easily with quick and sudden movements, so it's best to move slowly and intentionally with her, making sure she sees and acknowledges your hand before touching her to prevent her from startling. We feel she would be happy and do well in an adult only home or a home with older, gentle children (ages 12+) who have dog experience and know how to interact with her gently and respect her space and boundaries, like with toys. She would be overwhelmed in a busy, loud home and family with too much activity and enjoys a more leisurely, quiet, peaceful lifestyle.
Lila shares her foster home with other spaniels where she co-exists very well with them, but doesn't necessarily seek out interaction and engagement with them. Every now and then she gets the zoomies and will initiate a game of chase in the yard with her furry foster sister which is a hoot to see. Otherwise, she is much more focused on her relationship with her people.We know she would be happy and do well with other mild mannered adult Cavaliers, or other dogs of similar temperament in the home, but we also feel she could be happy as the only dog in the home as long as she was able to be with her people most of the time and have very low alone time. She has not been exposed to any cats while in our care and so we are unsure how she would do sharing a home with a feline friend.
Lila travels well in the car, riding safely and comfortably in her boosted car seat where she enjoys looking out the window before settling down for a nap. She loves to be able to tag along and accompany you as much as possible, and so we are seeking a family who will include her in their daily activities. We will ask that her adopting family provide her with a boosted car seat so she can continue to do so. Being on a leash is brand new to her and at this early stage of her rescue journey, she is unsure about it. Priority should be on helping her feel safe and secure in this new world around her instead of pushing her beyond her comfort zone. As Lila continues to blossom, leash training can be gently introduced and practiced in the safety of a fenced yard, allowing her to learn at her own pace. In the meantime, we would recommend a stroller as a wonderful way to enjoy walks and outings together.
IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡Most importantly, Lila needs a loving, committed family who will shower her with so much love and attention and make her an included and important member of the family. Therefore, we are seeking a family where someone will be with her much of the day and provide for her plenty of opportunities for quality time and closeness with her people.
