MEET ROSEY 🐶
We sprung beautiful 6 year old Rosey (DOB 7/10/2017) out of a shelter after she was discarded there by her breeder. This darling tri color girl came in quite stained, matted, and dirty, but cleaned up beautifully. At 13 pounds she is small in size but big in sweetness and personality! She is loving her new way of life, is thriving in rescue, and is now ready to find her perfect family to call her own.
MEDICAL 🩺
Rosey is now up to date on vaccinations, spayed, had a recent dental, is microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. All of her labwork including her heartworm and tick borne illness test and fecal test is negative, and her urinalysis and bloodwork is normal. Her eyes are clear and sparkly, and ears are clean and free from infection. While her left knee is normal, she does have a right luxating patella (unstable knee) which certainly does not give this little mover and shaker any trouble at this time. We have started her on a daily joint supplement which she should remain on for life.
A significant heart murmur was detected at her intake vetting and so she underwent an echocardiogram so we could learn more. Like so many adult Cavaliers, Rosey has Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) where her faulty, insufficient mitral valve has started to cause some remodeling/enlargement of her heart, placing her in stage B2 where she is currently asymptomatic and not at risk of heart failure, but would benefit from starting heart medications to help slow down any further progression of the disease. She has started twice a day Pimobendan and once a day Enalapril and is doing well on them. These medications cost about $30 a month. Rosey will need to remain under the care of a veterinary cardiologist so that her MVD can best be monitored and managed. She is due for her next echocardiogram in December.
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘
Precious Rosey is smaller in size and at her ideal weight at 13.4 pounds. In true Cavalier fashion, she is quite a foodie and is always excited and eager for meal time and treats. She eats her meals twice a day in the kitchen alongside her Cavalier foster siblings with no problems and is always the first one to finish! She always licks her bowl clean (and all the others!) She loves treats, including her heart meds disguised in a small piece of a pill pocket, and is so sweet and gentle taking them from your hand. To ensure she remains at her ideal weight, best health, and best self, her family must remain committed to continuing her strictly portioned meals, healthy treats, and daily activity/exercise.
This being the first time that Rosey has ever been in a home environment, potty training continues to be a work in progress but this smart girl is doing great as long as she is given frequent opportunities outside to be successful. She doesn't 'alert' or 'signal' that she needs to go out to potty, so her people must be vigilant in taking the initiative to take her out regularly and frequently including first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between including immediately after meals. She uses the safe and secured fenced yard for pottying and has a tendency to get distracted outside, so her family should be sure that she takes care of business before coming back in. Since she is so food motivated, a yummy, special, high value treat and gentle praise following good potty behavior will be wonderful positive reinforcement for her during her continued training. Even though she is doing wonderfully with her potty training in her foster home, please know that accidents are always to be expected especially initially while she transitions to a new environment and routine.
PERSONALITY 💕
Rosey's foster family describe her as sweet, joyful, playful, funny, and 'adorably naughty'! 'Fun' is her middle name and she is truly having a ball with her new lifestyle! Her darling little personality continues to bloom as she becomes more and more comfortable and confident. She loves to play 'chase' and will take off at top speed - a boy is she fast! She has also discovered bully sticks which may be her favorite, and she also has a thing for shoes. She does not chew them but she likes to relocate them and watch as you try to find a matching pair. As her foster mom says, "she keeps me on my toes!" And in true Cavalier form, she is the sweetest little thing who wants to be with her human at all times and is never far away from you. She is just happy and content to be with you, no matter what you are doing. She is the perfect little sidekick and fun best furiend!
ROUTINE ⏰
Rosey starts her day with a quick potty trip in the yard and then inside for breakfast before she makes herself comfy on a bed in the home office while her foster mom works from home. She keeps herself busy chewing on a bully stick or getting her beauty rest in while her foster mom works, with frequent trips outside for pottying, play, and fresh air. She spends much of the day with her foster family but during short periods of time when there are no humans at home, Rosey has run of the house, along with her Cavalier foster siblings, where she has plenty of space, comforts, and companionship, and does well. She has not been crated or otherwise strictly confined while in our care and it's not needed nor recommended for her. Of course Rosey is happiest being with her people though, and so we are seeking a family where someone can be with her much of the day and where she would have low alone time. Dinner is around 5pm and then at night, the little princess sleeps in the big bed where she is a great sleeper and likes to have her own pillow. She uses pet steps or a footstool to safely access on and off the bed and we are seeking a family who will continue to invite her into bed with them.
SOCIALIZATION 💜
When meeting people, Rosey is very curious but also a bit cautious initially. It helps to get down on the ground with her and she warms up nicely and quickly with a little time and once shown gentle love (and a treat or two doesn't hurt!). Once she knows you are safe and good, she will want all your affection and attention and will happily curl up with you for a snuggle. Everything is new to Rosey and while she is very brave and responds with more curiosity than fear, she does startle quite easily with loud or sudden noises and movements. She would be happiest and do best in a quiet adult only home without too much activity, noise, or people, or a home with older, gentle, children who can understand her puppy mill past and know how to engage with her gently and appropriately.
Rosey shares her foster home with other Cavaliers who she gets along with very well. In fact, Rosey has gotten along wonderfully with all the Cavaliers she has met in rescue (which has been a lot!). Initially, she looked to her furry foster siblings to learn the ropes and for cues on what to do and how to behave and now more confident, she very much enjoys their furiendship and companionship. She would be happiest and do best with another Cavalier(s), or other dog of similar size and gentle temperament in her furever home. She is a very playful girl and her ideal match would be another playful, active furiend who will engage in antics, fun, and play with her. She has not been exposed to any cats while in our care, so we are unsure how she would do living with a feline friend in the home.
IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡
Most importantly, Rosey needs a family who has the time and ability to shower her with lots of time, love, and attention. She will be happiest and thrive best in a home where someone can be with her much of the day and where she will have plenty of opportunity for activity, play, interaction, and engagement. We are seeking a home with another active, playful canine companion who will welcome her with open paws and engage in play with her. Rosey is just learning about a leash and because she startles easily, this must be practiced in a safe, quiet, and controlled environment. Therefore, for pottying purposes and so she can continue to enjoy her outdoor freedom, she needs a safe and secured fenced yard in her furever home. The more room to run the better! She has mastered doing up and down stairs, and because of her luxating patella there should be pet steps available for her to safely access on and off furniture. She is an excellent car rider in her safe and comfy boosted car seat and loves tagging along with you whenever she can - especially if the trip involves stopping for a pup cup! Lastly, because of her heart disease which requires continued monitoring, she should be within reasonable driving distance to a veterinary cardiologist and her family be able and prepared financially to meet her medical needs which include heart medications and echocardiograms.
