Welcome in, Rudy! Rudy is an absolutely precious 11 year old boy (DOB 7/10/2013) who comes to us as an owner surrender. The owner was “making changes in my life” and Rudy found himself as one of those changes, certainly through NO fault of his own 💔 That’s okay because Rudy will spend his special senior years ✨ with a family who will truly treasure him - we will make sure of it 💕
Rudy is settling beautifully into his foster home in Eclectic, Alabama 🏡 and will soon undergo his intake vetting. We will post a medical updated when we have one.
UDATE SEPTEMBER 20, 2024 Earlier this week we introduced you to precious 11 year old Rudy who came into our care as an owner surrender. He has now undergone his full intake vetting where he received an excellent report, especially for a senior boy 💙Rudy came into our care already up to date on vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped, but he underwent a thorough physical exam and full labwork. All of his labwork including his fecal test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, urinalysis, and bloodwork was normal and negative. 17 pound Rudy’s eyes, knees, and hips were found to be clear and congenitally sound but an audible heart murmur was detected due to mitral valve disease (MVD), which is to be expected for a senior Cavalier. He will soon visit with our wonderful cardiologist for a cardiac evaluation and echocardiogram so we can learn more about his stage of MVD and determine if he would benefit from starting heart medication 🩺Sweet Rudy is being fostered in Montgomery, Alabama where his foster family reports that he is the best boy ever! 💕
UDATE SEPTEMBER 21, 2024 11 year Rudy has made some new friends in his foster home 🧸 His foster mom reports that he loves his toys! 💕
UDATE Octoner 9, 2024 After a significant heart murmur was detected at his intake vetting, precious 11 year old Rudy in Eclectic, Alabama met with our wonderful cardiologist and underwent a cardiac evaluation and echocardiogram today 🩺 Rudy’s audible heart murmur is due to mitral valve disease (MVD) which of course plagues the breed and is to be expected for a Cavalier of his age. The mitral valve is insufficient in that it doesn’t not form a tight seal like it should. Because the valve is loose and faulty, there is a black flow and regurgitation of blood which can cause the heart to work harder and in turn create remodeling (enlargement) of the heart. The regurgitation of blood creates turbulence which results in the audible heart murmur. Imaging today revealed that Rudy’s cardiac structure has started to remodel and change. The enlargement of his left atrium and left ventricle has placed him in stage B2 meaning that there is remodeling but that he is asymptomatic at not in heart failure. At this stage, he can benefit from starting a medication (Pimobendan/Vetmedin) which can help to slow down any further progression of his heart disease. Rudy is now starting this medication. Rudy’s echocardiogram today serves as a baseline and he should remain under the care of a cardiologist where his mitral valve disease can best be monitored and managed through recheck echocardiograms. He will be due for his next echo in April to see how he’s responding to the medication. Managing heart disease is sadly just something that comes along with owning and loving a Cavalier - the good news is that for many Cavaliers, it can be very well managed with medications while under the care of a cardiologist ❤️
